I shot quite some Table Tennis shots this weekend, and here are a few I'd like to share with you. Comments are appreciated of course.
First three with a 70-200 2.8L IS and the last five with my 85 1.8.

Really enjoy this series. For me, #1 and #7 are my favs. Might have to try shooting some table tennis sometime.

I must say though I didn't really like the 70-200 2.8L IS that much for Table Tennis. Not only was f/2.8 a tad too slow for the gym I had to work in, I also found it quite heavy...making it very hard to track the action.
You also don't really need the zoom, for small centrecourts (like with the last 5 pics) a 85mm or a 100mm is more than enough, with a bigger centrecourt 135mm is the best FL. And since the players don't move back and forth more than 3 meters, a prime will work fine. You can always crop a bit, which is no problem because they are so sharp.

I use an 85 1.8 for indoor sports for the reasons you mention...I love that lens!
