I'm shooting with a 30D and 430EX. I was playing around with the flash manual zoom setting and now i can't get it back to displaying the focal length on the LCD. I think that I've put it back in the auto mode. I also tried the flash off camera with a cable and remote hot shoe. The flash fires but it is many stops overexposed, nuclear. I reduced the flash output on the camera as much as i could and under exposed and still nuclear. The remote hot shoe is very old. Is it possible that it's missing some of the contacts for use with new digital cameras? Any thoughts?
