Hi, Pekka,

I just registered a domain with a web hosting today. And I followed the EE1.22 installation guide and completed steps 1 to 5. However, I cannot get to Step 6 where it says "When setup.php reports all is well you have installed EE succesfully. EE can be run from http://www.yourserver.com/gallery/ and the editor from http://www.yourserver.com/gallery/foo32423423/ (or whatever your input folder was renamed to)".

When I type in that address, it says "THE PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED, check your network settings, ... ...". Could you please let me know what to do to solve this issue?

Thank you,

Sean

Sorry, I did type in my own server name like www.pengrus.com/gallery and it cannot be displayed. Neither can the editor.

Hi,

If you just opened the website, it will take a couple of days for nameservers to update - I can't access http://www.pengrus.com from here at all. Usually ISP's will give you and IP address for http so that you can upload and test before DNS is updated.

Also, some servers like Cobalt has two seemingly similar server root folders, and only one of them is 'public'. Ask your ISP what is the ftp address of public server root.

Pekka,

You are great! Thanks for the prompt help. You understand that how much I want this excellent gallery up and running... ...

You're right the pengrus.com is not available, but, now I am able to access from here:

You can see that I did some minimum editing like changing my name etc.

I tried not to bother you too much. However, I still have a couple of questions:
1.
Is the above link is the primary interface for the EE? I guess I don't need to go to my file manager do the daily maintainess, like add photos, etc.

2. Don't laugh at me. But I don't know exactly how to add photos and create new exhibit after reading your FAQ. Could you point me to something detailed on how to add photos?

I notice that there is a "Create New Exhibit" option on the top right. I created one called "PEOPLE", but why I cannot see any folder called "PEOPLE" created in the file manager view?

Thank you so much for your help, and I am almost there with your kindest help!

Can be. All editor pages have the same navigation menu.

You add photo _files_ and do folders with ftp (EE utility for that will be available in future versions). When files are uploaded you use the EE editor to create them and add them to exhibitions.

Take some time to see how the example gallery is in your server and how the paths and other things are set up for it. This should give you an idea how it all works. You can of course use the D30 exhibition paths in your own work, too.

And before you do anything:

- delete setup.php
- rename your input folder to something secret. Don't give it away in public - mail me the address if you have problems and need me to check your editor setup.

I notice that there is a "Create New Exhibit" option on the top right. I created one called "PEOPLE", but why I cannot see any folder called "PEOPLE" created in the file manager view?

See the answer above.

Thank you so much for your help, and I am almost there with your kindest help!

Keep asking! :)

Cheers,

Pekka

Pekka,

Thank God that you're in the other side helping me right now!

I know how to add photo files and folders with ftp. But where do I put the new photo files or folders? Should it be inside the gallery folder? or should it be inside the "D30 Photos" folder? or should it be under my web site's root folder like pengrus/www? Or it does not matter?

So my understanding is that I upload the resized JPEG photos individually or in batch, and the EE exhibit will do the different thumbs automatically with Edit Photo, right?

I will not need to upload three different copies of one JPEG file into different thumb folder, right?

If you have similar message posted before, please point me there that way I can save you time and do the research by myself.

Thanks so much,

Sean

You need to remove the url to the editor from the post, anyone could go in and cause untold damage

Editor will NOT create sizes for you in this version of EE. You'll need to create

1) thumbs - normal thumbnails for listings
2) microthumbs - very small micro thumbnails for navigation
3) big photos (big, medium, small - whatever you like to present)

and upload them to correct folders (decided by you). Most photo editors have a batch or automation mode for easy "one-click" creation of all aforementioned sizes.

I use Easy Thumbnails (http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/index.html?1.8c) which is easy to use, makes goodlooking thumbs AND IS FREEWARE! What more can you want?? :D

Here's a screendump of the options you get:
