I'm going to NYC soon to visit my girlfriend, I'm stuck in Cleveland Ohio..
:(
Anyways, I have the 310D(300+hacked firmware hehe) Is this lens going to be ok? I really want the Canon 75-300 for $158 at amazon but I worry that it's 75 end will be too long still for some shots. Is 75 ok or not for the short end? I'll mainly be messing around taking her pictures, nothing professional just of us goofing off for memories. Or should I get the 50mm f1.8 which I've heard so many good things about. I just am scared of that lens cause it has no zoom at all. I prefer not to have to switch lens. I'll also walk around some and take pics of places, I've never been to nyc before so we'll leave her place a little bit.. hehe... err I'm gonna turn this forum into a porno... o.o Any other ideas are fine but I can't go over $160.. :( It's not a choicec to go over its a must if I don't want to be killed..

get the prime
IMO 75-300 isn't worth it. Save your money and get something nicer later

In other words whats the best size lens for NYC to cover pics of my gf, and the city. Will the kits 18-55mm do fine, the 50mm prime, or is the 75-300 ok. I just worry that at 75 I'll have to get too far away for some shots.

Why are you asking this? You posted another thread saying that you got the 75-300
Or did you mean that you have all of them and just asking which ones to take with you?
I'm confused.
If you're going, the 18-55 is a nice lens, cause you'd probably want to shoot arcitecture, and you're gonna need wide angle.
70-300... is not a city lens. But you should take it if you have it, so you can get a nice shot of the statue of liberty.

Because I returned that Tamron since a lot of the times the thingy wouldn't auto focus...

Can't you have both 75-300 and 50 1.8? I own both and I can say they are fairly good lenses given their prices. Well, actually the 50mm prime is awesome
I think you won't miss 75-300 in this trip. If you want to shoot buildings & portraits, go for 18-55 and 50mm prime. If you think you'll miss some telephoto, buy both. I'm almost sure you can find 70 more dollars to spend :)
Don't forget that 75-300 (and other "beginner/plastic" Canon lenses) are MUCH cheaper and not so THAT worse than more expensive lenses, and you can always upgrade any body or glass.

I do alot of shooting in NYC. You need a wide lens for scenery(buildings) and a long lens for non intrusive but tight people shots. I recommend the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 and the 100-400 IS L or 70-200 f/2.8. There are substitutes for these that are less costly like the 17-40 and the 70-200 f/4.
If I could only carry one lens, I would take the 24-70 f/2.8.

Scott - I think his budget was 160..........so those lenses are way out of his range...........
If you have the kit lens, then you have the perfect lens to take with you. I can shoot NYC all day just with the kit. The other lens I would recommend is the 50 f1.8..........This lens will be especially helpful when the sun is setting and you need that extra light. And did I mention that it is sharp sharp sharp??
If (and this is a big IF) you want to spend a few more extra for a really good and versatile lens.........I strongly recommend the Tamron 28-75 f2.8. This lens should cost you around 300 new.......

If budget is a major consideration:
It is a crime not have the 50mm f/1.8 (unless you already have 50mm f/1.4). Get it, it's cheap and is superb optically.
As far as the kit 18-55 lense goes, I feel this lense only has one usefull focal length...24mm. Everything else is too soft for my taste, but 24 gives great results when shooting group shots...for me.
As for the long end, I would save my money and get the 70-200 f/4L, unless you need the faster 2.8 for low light.
It's really what you shoot coupled with the amount of money you can afford. I'm absolutly no help when it comes to 3rd party lenses as I don't own any.
Cheers,
Scott

Scott, why will he need a long tele? I suppose his main subject is his girl friend...
Take the kit lens. If you want better quality, buy the 50/1.8. Enjoy your moments with your girl.

I like to take very tight crops of people at a distance so as not to disturb them, or by the time they know I'm taking their picture it's done. These were taken with the 100-400 IS L.

The girl on the first photo gets me every time. Now I won't be able to sleep again.
Also, as you can see the 100-400L is brutally sharp...

THanks for all the replies.. electricity was down in parts of cleveland since noon yesterday until about 3 minutes ago, booted up my pc asap and ran here lol. Anyways yes my gf will be my main subject so I'll take the kit lens and probably get the 50mm prime. I'll do some pictures around nyc but I mainly care about the gf. I've never been to nyc but don't plan on exploring much.. ^_-

I didn't know New York needed its own special lenses! What a city!
The 50 mm 1.8 is good for doing all purpose stuff and portrait shots. You may want to think about a wide angle adapter for doing cool cityscape shots.

I can recommend the Sigma 18-125 DC as lens for visiting a city. With its long zoom range including wide angle it is a really good travelling lens, as you can do all what you want on a city tour with one lens. The zoom range is a 35-mm equivalent of 28-200 mm, so you get fields of view as with a prosumer camera (DiMAGE A1/A2, Sony F828, ...). That makes it easier to go out with only one lens.
The lens produces sharp pictures (better than the kit lens), mich less CAs than the kit lens, has inner focus (so you can easily use a polarizer), comes with a hood and makes a much more solid impression than the kit lens. It is my "always-on" and has replaced the kit lens for me. Note that there is vignetting when you are on 18 or 125 mm with the lens wide open, either stop down the lens or zomm in 22-90-mm range if you need it widely open.
See these pictures (http://www.linuxprinting.org/till/images/paris-20040717/) of Paris (I live in Paris). So the lens should be also compatible with NYC.
The price in Europe is 300 EUR. If you do not want to invest in it, have the kit lens with you. And if you do not need tele (not so important for architecture) and want to invest more, then the 17-40 4L is a good choice, I do not have it, but a friend of mine, and his photos are really excellent.

Looks like you've made a good choice. The kit lens will be fine for sight-seeing and the 50 1.8 will be for the gf. You'll take excellent portrait shots with it.
Plus, you'll be able to save money and eventually buy a big fat juicy steak like the one Scott has. :)
