Batteries for Ixus 500

Hi there
I want to buy a spare battery for my Ixus 500. What are your views on non canon batteries. They seem to be a lot cheaper than canon batteries.
Is there any chance that non canon batteries will damage my camera.
Any views would be much appreciated.

I bought a spare battery from Jessops (Major UK Retailer) for my Ixus 400 when I bought the camera. It is their own brand and was appprox 20% cheaper. It works very well and lasts almost as long as the Canon one.

Canon batteries are only as good as the best of the others out there.
If they're a 1/4 of the cost and last as long, you'll save money .. if they last 1/2 as long you'll still save money. What do you have to lose ??
