Avid readers of this column will be aware that I was less then happy with a recent lens purchase.

Swapped it today (plus a couple of quid!) for a 100-400.

Wow and thrice wow! Ultra-portable; ultra-compact; ultra-light black!

Absolutely gob-smacked at the results but must say that 'smooth-tight' adjustment is in a stupid place and the red ring is bordering on pink.

"ultra-light black"
"gob-smacked"

Those must be some European terms ....
Here in the States the "ultra-light black" we call "beige" ....
And "gob-smacked" I guess could be interchangeable with "floored" ....

But as with any new vocabulary word, I will do my best to use "gob-smacked" in a sentence today (but I will look around to see who's nearby before I do that!) .....

In all seriousness, though, congrats on the new lens - I have one, too, and can't do without it for field sports. I do agree that the "smooth-tight" ring is in a bit of an awkward spot, but then I rarely use it so I shouldn't complain too loudly.

Congrats, again .... and have fun with it.

Thanks Cecil

I suppose that I should use terms that are understood on both sides of the pond and for other countrymen/women also.

I am really pleased with this lens - restored my faith in Canon, Nuns and, in fact, the whole clergy in general. I still think though that the ring is bordering on effeminate pink!

no way, keep it up. your post really cracked me up, you are so funy.it's it's nice to find some british morsels in here from time to time.

congrats on the lens. i wish I could afford one. I actually dreamed I had one last night - seriously it's the first time I've dreamed about camera equipment and I've never even seen one in 'real life'. Is it possible to catch L fever from a distance?

There are some great things about this lens,. including some items that in this earlier lens Canon got "right" that they subsequently screwed up thouroughly in more recent releases...

All the swithces on the 100-400mm lens are far better protected from being accidently knocked in the wrong place than say with the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens... which seems to have all it's switches perpetually bumped to "off" no matter what care is taken.

Yep.. love that 100-400mm! Enjoy it!

Way to go Sam. The 100-400 practically lives on my 10D. Now you have to post a photo of a duck and a deer ( or stag )taken with the beast.

Those of you with a 100-400, do you still keep
a version of the 70-200 around? Is the 100-400
as versatile as the 70-200? If you have both,
which one do use more?

I'd like to get a 100-400L in the future, but I
just can't see carrying both the 70-200 f4 and
this lens -- in addition to my 17-40, 50 & 85
primes.

Cadenza,
Got both and use both. The 100-400 is my first choice for wildlife but this past season, I shot a lot of mounatain bike races with the 70-200IS. The 100-400 was just too long from where I was set up beside the courses. If I could only have 2 lenses, these would be them ( for my intrests of course. Other folks would probably have a different choice.)

I have all three: the 70-200 f/2.8L IS and the f/4, and the 100-400L. To be honest, my favorite of the three is the f/4, but only if the light is good and I don't need the extra reach. Of the three lenses, the 70-200 f/2.8L is the least used. The 100-400 gets used most.

The only trouble with the 100-400mmL lens is that it doesn't bounce worth a damn. <name withheld to protect the innocent>

Yes, I have the 100-400L and the 70-200L f/4 and I still carry both around. The 70-200 is such a pleasure to have on the camera. It's light, small and inconspicuous. I probably use the 100-400L more, but then I tend to use my Sigma APO 120-300mm f/2.8 EX more than either of them…

Hi Sam and Cadenza,

Yep the 100-400 IS is a lovely lens, I've been using it for the last two weeks to photograph the planes at Farnborough airshow. Mixing it with the 1.4* extender to give just a little more reach and the pics still look really nice.

I have both the 100-400 4.5-5.6 and the 70-200 2.8 IS. The 70-200 is very usefull for when you haven't got loads of light. The 100-400 is great but at 4.5-5.6 can be a little slow. The 70-200 2.8 fills that gap nicely and is fast and very sharp.

As for which I use more, it really depends on what I'm shooting. If I have the big bag with me then just about everything is in it and it depends on where we are and what we are doing as to what I pull out of the bag (I dont carry the 200 1.8, 65mpe or lifesize converter in the big bag as they are special event lenses). If I have decanted into a smaller bag then most of the time its the 70-200 that goes in the bag, however I do know that the wife has a 100-400 in her bag if I suddenly see a "must have".

All things considered I guess the 70-200 just beats the 100-400 for most use, but its a close run thing.

Best regards

BearSummer

I know, I was! This was the only time I've seen it that cheap. The guy wich was selling it, was from germany so I phoned him, asked all things and get it. everything works great! it seems that I am a lucky fellow :-)

but I've seen it a lot of times for about 150-200 € more on ebay germany. look there, maybe you can find a cheap one...
