callign tec heads
im looking at getting a large (1tb maby more) want to set it up for raid 5. I know you need hardware to be able to do anything more than raid 1. Obviously I carnt add any hard ware to my imac so are there any enclosures that will allow me to run a raid 5 configuration???

i've heard great things about this:

http://www.drobo.com

Or if you want to run a NAS. Here are some reviews:

It's definitely an External only option,..
There are a lot of options, but all pretty pricey.

What interfaces does your Imac have? I'd think Firewire800 bare minimum to take advantage of the RAID 5 performance,.. but better yet would be E-Sata,. do Imac's do E-Sata?
NAS is handy, but loses the performance benefits I would imagine (I may be wrong .. how does Gigabit Ethernet compare to Firewire8000 and E-Sata? )

3 Ware is one of the more reputable RAID companies,;

Ive looked at the drobo but they work out at $600 here before you start adding drives to it so its a really expensive option. Just wondering if there are any better alternatives

My imac has usb 2 and firewire 800 no e-sata
will look in to 3ware

thanks

just build a PC and use it as an NAS.
here is an article I found,

Or a stand alone with Gigabit Nic,

That Drobo is cool, but since it is only USB, it does transfer kind of slow (from what I read from users of the device)

*round of applause for the most common sense answer of the day
