I hope this counts as a working vehicle.

Detroit Police Motorcycle
Taken June 12th outside the Compuware Building in downtown Detroit (where I interned this summer).
Canon a640
Shooting mode: Beach
Shutter: 1/250
Aperture: 4.0
ISO: Auto
Processing: I increased the contrast and clarity a little bit, and recovered some data working with the jpeg as a raw. I couldn't recover the sidewalk texture though. :(

sorry....but I need a clarification....what is a vehicle that is NOT a tranportation type?

...by its very definition, a vehicle is for transporting something

Everyone, please note this message;)

chrysalis , thank you for getting this question out so soon. You're right, it needs clarificaton. That's why I put "vehicle" in quotes and stated that it should be a vehicle or machine that is self propelled and does work or is working...

Refining my intent, I looking to see things that are specific to tasks other than just moving the public in trains, planes and automobiles as the prime function. The police motorcycle is fine with me because it's dedicated to getting cops to were they must be for the job. A sight-seeing helicopter wouldn't work but a Coast Guard helicopter would.

The last challenge which I won (and why I am here) was interesting in the way each entrant interpreted the subject. It made for a very interesting display...If you think your photo is iffy (to me), then support it with comments. I'll be open minded.

So, let's have a good time with this!

-Joe

Folks, it has been a pleasure. I have enjoyed all of the offerings of those of you who posted pictures. The range of working "vehicles" was interesting: maritime, law enforcement, agriculture, industrial power, military, construction, and, er..."whimsy".

I am a novice photographer, have been for 60 years and it is a hobby with me. So, my judgement is subjective. I am commenting on all of them in my subjective way..

#1: Three Tugboats

Drocpsu, I love this. These "burly", nimble, and powerful boats are moored, and waiting to go to work. I enjoyed watching boats like these help our ship into port 50 years ago when I was in the Navy.

The setting of waterfront buildings is interesting. I wonder if some are apartments where people see the coming and going of these tugs regularly. I can look at the details here for a long time! Congratulations and thank you!

Speed Challenge #92 is up to you Drocpsu!

#2: Freighter moving cargo up the Colombia River at the Astoria bridge in Oregon

Marcy, The freighter (tanker?) framed by the Astoria bridge with the background of low clouds on the horizon and the wonderful blue sky is appealing to me. Another working "vehicle" doing work!

#3 : Working the Soil

Thanks Ed S for submitting this photo. Actually, when I made this challenge assignment, I expected to see some farm "vehicles". I was part of a picture like this in October last year, doing this very thing on a cousin's farm in Iowa. A working "vehicle" doing work!

Also, thanks for putting me into this challenge!

Here are my remaining comments for the rest of you. Not in particular order...

: And the Day is Done

Blast, I was glad to see another entry towards the end of the challenge. It has a dramatic sky and the machinery is just still distinguishable. Another day done on what might be the beginnings of a new housing tract, shopping center, industrial complex, or whatever.

: Detroit Police Motorcycle

Alex_H, Nice photo which I think needs more contrast. The hint of reflection in the polished granite wall is neat. As you noted, the pavement suffers from over exposure. It would be nice to see some texture there.

: Armored Tractor

Paul B, interesting photo. I would have liked to see a somewhat oblique view since the cannon on the right is hard to see. I realize that this is a static display, probably indoors with not much light. The straw on the top side of the treads is a nice touch in the display.

: Reaching for the Sky

benarnold, an interesting result of working into the sun. A dramatic picture, but for me, a guy in a hard hat on the lift might have made it more so.

dexdex, your's is my "whimsy" entry. Barca, I guess, is a ship's boat. The colors are what I might expect in the West Indies or maybe Africa. I wonder, from the "junk" showing above the wall, what it is like there. The seemingly new extension ladder is an interesting element. But I feel that the boat is very incidental as a recognizable working vehicle to me. A fun photo, but not meaningful to this challenge.

But, I remember your "San Marco" picture in the Reflections challenge that I was very charmed by. What an interesting example of a chance setting!

wow, how exciting! I've never won one of these before. Thanks for the kind words. :D

I took the photo in Portsmouth, NH (where there is a naval base!) The building in the background actually are quite expensive condos with a great view. I'd love to have a view of the tugboats daily comings and goings.

Congrats to everyone who posted. There were some interesting entries this week.

The new challenge will be posted shortly.
