View Full Version : Advice needed, I am buying a Nintendo Wii

This is a sudden thing on my part. Wife's birthday coming up Wednesday. We don't exchange gifts, so it is more of a joke gift that "we" might use but probably just me.

Anyway, the issue is, what should I buy? I pretty much want the top of the line WII but I don't know if the consoles are all the same anyway. I see accessories like a Nanchuck, or something like that. I can figure out which games to buy, but I want to have a complete system right out of the box with cool bells and whistles. Budget is pretty much unlimited, so please let me know what I NEED and what I will regret if I don't have it.

I've heard these things are a blast for plying tennis, golf, and other sports games. If so, I look forward to the play. Right now I have the Xbox 360 but it is not a game type thing where there is any activity by me whereas the Wii looks like I am more physically active.

Thanks for your list of "must have" things that make the Wii special. Remember, $$ are not nearly as important than the fun.

Wii Sports is by far the best game I've played on it, and it comes in the box. Make sure you get 2 controllers though! Super Paper Mario is a great game, but you have to read the entire story line which is quite long! I wasn't very impressed with Zelda on it, and I haven't tried any others. Depending on where you have everything set up in the room, you may want to get a wireless sensor bar. Oh, and rechargeable AA batteries too!

I second the Wii Sports recommendation.

And the rechargeable batteries. And a fast charger. And the second controller.

In fact, pretty much everything Adam just said :-)

Oh, I also have composite video cables for mine for use on a wide screen projector. I could tell a huge improvement! If used on a TV smaller than 42", you might not be able to tell much of a difference though.

So far so good! Thanks. BUT, I see it comes with the sports package, which is great, then there is stuff like Tiger Woods Golf, Madden Football, and some other tennis game. Are they really better than what came with it?

Video cables, I agree with getting good cables, I have a 65" TV in HD so imperfections unfortunately stick out.

I like the wireless idea, is it something that goes through my wireless Internet, or just a stand alone wireless system?

As with everything else, am I buying just before a major upgrade? If a new system is coming out soon, I'd take a pass on this one.

Looks like the tennis, bowling and other sports stuff is worth it on its own. Fun stuff. I am an older fart so I hate getting games that take a long time to learn. I own a 360 and only play a few games as I don't want to spend the time to learn too many controller codes. Are the basic sports package really user friendly so I can play pretty quickly without having to lean a lot of function keys?

Thanks again.

there wont be a replacement for the wii for a while, its still a new console.
Wireless works without any problems for connecting to the net/updating etc.

Ive had the following games.
wii sports.
wario.
rayman.
zelda
red steel.
and a golf game (cant remember the title its no the tiger woods one)
wii play

the only games that i kept are sports and the golf one, didnt like any of the others.

I will probably sell mine when the eyetoy comes out for the ps3 as the only time we use the wii is when friends come around, i must admit it is fun then.

oh and the sports games are very easy to use, at christmas we had my nan playing (mid 70's) and my neice and nephew (5 and 7) and everyone picked it up no problem.

hope that helps

When I got my Wii a month ago, it came with one regular controller and a nanchuck controller. The Wii Sports game was included with it. If you want two controllers, which I highly recommend, you'll need to get that separately. I got my 2nd controller when I bought the Wii Play game which came boxed with a controller.

As for networking, without buying anything else, you can connect wirelessly to the internet via the wireless network you already have in your home. If you aren't wireless but have a wired network, you'll need to get a wired network adapter for the Wii player to connect to your network.

I just got a wii about 3-4 weeks ago and I love it. I got driver, NFS Carbon, super paper mario, mario party 8, and then downloaded a bunch of games onto it... super mario bros, donkey kong, super mario bros 2... wish 3 would get released lol.

But yeah, definitely get 2 controllers, 2 nunchucks and if you like donkey kong or other old games, get a classic controller because you will need it.

I love the wii, best game system I have owned yet.

make sure to get a second remote, and another nunchuck. Also, if you want to play virtual console games, get a classic controller. The Wii has wifi built-in, and you can download a good number of old NES, Super NES, and N64 games directly to your console in seconds. They require this controller. It's only 20 bucks.

The wii is a fantastic console, and I've had more fun in the past month of owning mine than in years of owning other systems. Bowled a 300 the other day. :-)

As for games, I've got probably 7 or 8. No idea what you like, though. I really do think Wii Sports is the most fun, but I also enjoy games like Heatseeker (jet fighting game) and Need for Speed: Carbon.

Yeah same here... give it time. They seem to be releasing more and more games.

But I agree, I have had more fun beating Donkey Kong in the short time it took me more than I did years ago... Ya just never know what ya have til you dont have it. Always been a nintendo fan!

wario is fun and if you get the 2nd controller, throw in another 10 bucks and get the Wii play, it comes with a game and a 2nd controller for 49.99 where as the controller alone is 39.99

I got the wii on opening day (yes I slept outside :P). Great unit. Wii sports and Wiiplay are good. Next year when Wii-Fit is released, I'll be sleeping outside again :P Joking aside, Wii-Fit is gonna be awesome.

Wow, great advice here. Classic controller, specific games, extra controllers, wifi setup, rechargeable charger packs, etc., etc.

I could have jumped on some used ones off Craigslist, but new just seems better since I don't know what all to look for in used, especially when some ying-yangs out there are TRYING to sell a used one, no games, for $350!

I was going to order one yesterday for delivery tomorrow, but I leave town soon for a Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque so I'll wait until I return. Actually, I will order it while there so it arrives the same day I return! Something to look forward to.

Thanks again all, I will check into the thread again just before I make my order. I usually buy from Amazon for these kinds of things, free shipping and all, but if there is some special place to buy these, as BH is for photo stuff, let me know.

Ok I know I this is dumb question, but I'm new to this Wii stuff and I wanna know this before I buy. At futureshop just Wii console and remote is sold for $269 but Costco this stuff comes:
Nintendo Wii™ hardware includes:
Remote
Nunchuk
Wii™ Sports
NykoŽ Nintendo Wii™ Charge Station
2 rechargeable NiMH battery packs
This is $299
My main question is that, is the nunchuck important? Is it necessary to play along? Or can i just buy the futureshop one for less? Also if I get 2 remote controls does that mean I need 2 nunchucks?
Thanks for your help!

The console itself includes a remote, nunchuk, wii sports, and all the necessary cords. If the console you're looking at doesn't include these things, I would never buy it, as that's a sneaky store. The nunchuk is necessary for a number of things. One of the sports on the included game can't be played without it. Almost all of the regular Wii games (sold separately) use the nunchuk as well.

All you're getting is two rechargeable battery packs to put on the remotes and a base to charge them. That's what the $30 gets you. I just use the rechargeable batteries from my flash in the remotes. I've got 4 remotes, and it takes two "sets" (4 each) of batteries for that. No biggie.

It should only be $250, btw. $20 isn't much, but that's more than it should be.

Thanks I live in Canada and the only stores i've seen a wii in are costco futureshop and bestbuy and best buy is like $289, futureshop does have the things you mentioned (called em) and costco well i dont think i'm gonna pay $30 more for batteries and charger, i'll just buy AA batteries instead. Unfortunatly just buying one game I like with 2 remotes and 2 nunchuks and wii console it comes up to be $450. But I'm really excited about this game and I wanna buy it. It's called Bleach: Shattered Blade. Also another question I thought was do I need to buy anything else other than the console to get the internet connection? And the internet has to be wireless too right? And do the 3 channels come with a regular console set too?
Thanks for your help

3 channels? What do you mean?

Let me be clear...the console comes with a remote and nunchuk. I didn't know if you understood that or not.

Nothing is needed to get an internet connection. Yes, it has to be wireless. If you don't have a wireless connection, you can get a simple dongle from most any store, marketed by Nintendo, that will turn any computer's connection into a wireless one, via USB to the PC. Then you'll have a Wii-capable wireless connection.

Also, just so you know, wireless internet browser doesn't come on the Wii. You have to purchase it on the wii's "wii shop" channel, and it'll run you 1000 wii points (10 bucks). however, you have it forever after that. You can still, however, view news, weather, and buy virtual console games without buying anything additional.

I've got my Wii, bought one off Craigslist, paid too much, ignorance. Then found out about mods, the good kind. Got one coming in tomorrow implanted in a new Wii, so I'll have two sets of controls of each kind, the wireless sensor bar thing that extends distance from TV, upgraded cables for going from i to p, as I understand it, 2000 points, and some Earforce Headphones. I think that does it except two CD disc holders to hold the 106 games I have now. Should be a fun time learning the system and game over the next few days, as it arrives overnight mail sometime in the next four hours or so, lol. Will need to unload the overpriced unit I bought, as well as return the Tiger Woods 08 and the golf club accessory, oh well, worth it.

how the heck do you use headphones with a wii?

Also how the heck did you get 106 games?

One of the few accessories I didn't get, oh well, here comes another Amazon order today! lol

Oh, and of course I own the originals to every copy of each game and would never suggest pirating them.

all i am going to say is Zelda which in my own opinion is the best game ever created. even if i didn't play or even want to play any other game, i would still gladly buy the Wii just so i can play this game. if i could, i would play this game over and over again even though i already finished it 3 times.
