View Full Version : Does the DSLR need regular servicing like a car?

Do you guys send your cameras for regular check-ups at the local Canon service center? If yes, how often? How much does it cost (if not on warranty anymore)? Can you get the focusing system checked?

My 10D just turned 1 a few weeks ago. Now, I'm thinking that maybe I should have it checked. It works fine though.

They usually work for a few years... and the components either working or dead... and you notice dead components easy.

So it's not quite like a car, which dies on you gradually over the years, starting to lose acceleration, rust, make noises.

If you don't have probs with your cam, then it's ok.

Yeah, I had the same assumption. It's just that I saw someone post on another thread about his camera being scheduled for servicing. I don't know if the camera was broken or I just misunderstood.

Anyway, combine that with the 10D auto-focusing problem that many have encountered, it got me thinking. Maybe there are some aspects of the camera (like the auto focusing system) that might require recalibration after awhile.

Plus, I think it would be good for me if professional Canon technicians were the ones cleaning the sensor, mirror, etc. I've tried removing some dust from my mirror and that was already a pain. Blowing and brushing just seems to redistribute the problem. And I get nervous wiping the mirror too hard. I'm just not comfortable messing with the insides of my (what I consider) very expensive camera.

the only thing i think you need to check up regularly is sensor, if you change lens regularly in windy, sandy or watery conditions, you'll have to do that.

set aperture to 22 and take a shot of blue sky, then in photoshop, apply auto level, spots on the image would be dusts on the sensor.

Is lens cleaning covered under warranty in the UK? if not how much does it cost and could I take it to be done at Jessops (where I bought the cam) or where?

Apart from bits breaking/failing and cleaning, I specifically asked Canon's Chuck Westfall whether it would be sensible to send in the camera for recalibration periodically. he said, no only have the camera serviced when there is a problem.

Lens cleaning I would doubt is covered by warranty. It is something you can easily do youself. Jessops will be able to sell you the appropriate materials. It's not hard, but if you are careful when handling lenses and use lens caps, you shouldn't need to clean a lens very often other than using a blower to get rid of dust and fluff.

I reckon I clean the 10D sensor more often than my lenses.

Roger
