Ok so my 40D is scheduled to arrive in 2 days, in the next 3 days after it arrives i'll have 3 days of car races here in Portugal, so i'd like to see some advices / ideas.
i'm thinking to carry a tripod to do some nice 50 /th pans or even lower, or can i use my 70 200 L IS is mode 2 to do this ?
right now i'm reading Best use of location and AF points for motorsport by kenny G http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=135409
anything will help really ! , oh and btw i've got press passes for this.

Centre or lower single focal point
AI Servo mode
Shutter priority 1/320
Raw
Iso to give around F8
Good place to start :)
As to the IS on or off debate when panning - good question. Last time someone asked I think I remember a long debate

I never use a tripod for panning, it just gets in the way. If you need something to support the camera and lense, a monopod might work better. If it's your first time, start with a little quicker shutter speed and work your way down. As previously stated, shutter priority, adjust iso for proper f stop.
Oh yeah, and be sure to post your pictures.

If your signed on, likely that you won't be able to take a tripod into the restricted areas. Last thing anyone will want is a tripod getting in the way of things. Looking at your gear list, you should be able to hand hold without any problems at all.
The advice that Dave (Picturesports) has given you is as good a place as any to start.
Simon.

yes i also thought of that, and i think following the subject with a tripod might be slightly harder... and yeah i'll always be under 320 th all times...
and why aperture f8 ? shouldn't i try to sticking with aperture of f4 to give me some nice out of focus blur ?
anyway thanks .

at a pan out of focus blur isnt really a big deal cause the bg is going to be "panned" =)
what kind of races are u going to shoot mainly btw? Track? rally? offroad? ...

well in that case hell no! haven't read picturesports post so heres goes my opinion
u should not use always center focus point cause keeping car in the midle of "frame" isn't always the option around
u should also shoot in jpge cause, well i dont see any advantages to shoot sports in raw unless u wanna fill your hard drive as soon as possible
shutter should be between 250 to 125, slower than that only for extreme pans which are sometimes bit hard to get
F at between 8 in really slow pans like 125 and below, still its aceptable to use it at 250 and so on ...
well at least its my opinion bases on my experience ( well i'm only 17 and i only shoot in about 1 year )
btw if you want more info i don't get angry if you add me to msn, actually its easier for me to explain in Portuguese =D
btw 3 days of track? isn't 70-200 bit "short" for the job?

Every event is going to be different. As the light changes so do the settings on the camera :-)
1/320 is a good starting point. 1/320 will normally give you a sharp car and blur on the wheels to show movement. If you are panning then anything down to 1/60 works well, some of the people here get even lower.
If it is rallying you are covering the movement of the car can be sideways to the pan as the car slides.
F8 gives you enough depth even when the cars get close to get the whole car in focus.
I've shot at f2.8 and had good results it all depends on the exact day.
Enjoy the day and take lots of pictures.
Post them when you have them :-)
