Hi guys first of all it there's a previous thread on this topic please redirect me and moderator delete this topic.

I'm a digital point and shoot guy. I graduated from 3 sony PoS' and i'm stopping with the T-1 as my pocketable camera.

I want to go for a dSLR. Mind you, here's where i am right now. I know very little (a little above nothing) in terms of SLR or dSLR photography just some of the basics really , but i intend to learn. I dont own any lenses so i can go the Canon, Nikon or Sigma way.

After a thorough research i'm down to a Nikon D70 or a Canon 10D.

I'm a little hell bent on the 10D but what's holding me back is the notion (perhaps i'm mistaken) that the D70's features (speed, buffer, fps etc) are better than the 10D because it was released later than the 10d thus incorporating technologies unaivaliable to or much to expensive when the 10D came out. Am i correct on this point?

Next is my friends say that Nikon's lenses are comparatively more expensive than the Canons

Last note, i probably will buy only one lens in the near future a xx-200mm. I'll primarily use the camera to shoot my kid who darts like a cat and jumps from left to right in a jiffy. Admittedly his actions are the ones i'd like to shoot and frame. Also I'd like to avoid an upgrade of the body for at least 2 years.

On the other hand what's stopping me form getting a dSLR as opposed to a S1 is the fact that dSLR's dont have EVF's.

Comments anyone?

??? You'd like a relatively low-resolution, battery-sucking electronic viewfinder rather than the efficient, sharp optical finder of a DSLR??? Or am I misunderstanding something (I hope!)?

This being a Canon forum, we'll all be delighted to recommend the 10D over the Nikon D70. Yes, the D70, having come out later, is able to have some features that the 10D doesn't. After all, they had 3 generations (D30, D60, and 10D) of Canon DSLRs to swipe ideas from. But the 10D still has a wider film-speed range (100-3200 ISO vs. 200-1600 for the D70). Without going over the relative specs point-by-point, you'll find that they each have their own strengths. The Canon will do just fine stopping the average hyper-active tyke (or small, furry animal). And there are some wonderful lenses encompassing the 200 mm focal length.

personaly i find it a bit odd to ask such questions about whether nikon technology is better than canon on a forum for canon users - you arent likely to get 100% impartial advice. I would ask elsewhere if i were you

I agree, it's like asking the salesman at a FORD car dealership if Fords are better than CHEVYS..

Which we all know they are not.

I'm sure he's asking the same question, with wording suitably altered, on a Nikon site. From which he will learn that we Canon users are fine, upstanding paragons who modestly report only the absolute factual issues, bad or good, about the finest equipment in the world, while the Nikon users are self-aggrandizing egotists who extoll their sorely deficient products beyond all reason or belief.

Beautiful :)

But next time when you have a point, don't be shy - say what you mean

Buy the Nikon. It's best to get your mistakes out of the way early.

No, that's not really true. Both the D70 and 10D have a very good 6 megapixels sensor. Technologically, the D70 doesn't have anything that makes it clearly superior to the 10D.

The 10D is well-known for its extremely low-noise images. It has been the top camera for a long time in this regard (it even has lower noise than Canon's professional 1Ds and 1D). It's noise characteristics are better than the D70. One thing that I think is a disadvantage of the Nikon is that the lowest ISO setting is 200. You can set the 10D and 300D to 100, which will give you cleaner images.

Another, important thing: You should not look at only the camera body, but at the whole system. Look at the lenses and other accessories that are available for both cameras. That's even more important than the camera itself - you'll probably upgrade your DSLR long before your lenses are worn out.
