A word about image upload/resize:

EE WILL have resizing and upload features in the future - it is being coded as we speak. But before it is ready there a lots of things to do (like a database snapshot backup/restore system and online help which are nearly finished). To resize images on server would require you to install PHp with GD or Imagemagick libraries which is not novice stuff and not permitted by many virtual server providers. To resize images on the fly would severely slow down EE and your server.

So what will the upload solution be? Let me announce it right here and now:

EE will be accompanied in near future with a Windows program (named now "EE Uploader") which will offer you a clear workflow from batch selection of photos, resizing, naming, sharpening and uploading all sizes to multiple servers and correct directories (creating them if needed) to finally dumping EE the required data with EXIF. This application will read all common image formats and function on your own PC with very fast speed. I think that is the only sensible solution and in par with rest of EE quality :)

Your first question will be "will it be available for Mac or UNIX?" The answer is "no, because I don't know any mac or UNIX programmers.". This software is not programmed by me (it's done in C++) and that is also one of the main reasons to the fact I can't tell for sure when it will be finished. We have working versions (open, save, ftp, resizing, sharpening etc. works) in alpha stage, but no definite release date yet.

Any news about the image uploader?

I recently setup a photo gallery using Exhibit but I would like to know is it a must to create photo one by one or I can point to a directory folder and let Exhibit create photos in a batch?

Thanks a lot!

Pekka,

I am so excited waiting for the new version coming out. As a current user of EE, I am curious to know how easy it is to upgrade to new version. Will I keep all the current settings, such as the path, galleries, hits data, tech data, etc, and just do a regular upgrade or do I need to start all over again?

Thank you,

Sean

Tony,

The upload program will come, but not with 1.3.
With 1.3 and 1.22 you can add all photos into an exhibition with one button, so the only task not done by EE is upload and Exif input. Don't worry, those features will come in time - my current goals in 1.3 are in usage (e.g. automatic "image -> path" -finder, fully featured backup program and general improvements in speed and usability - the whole code base has been debugged and improved really extensively).

Hi Sean,

Update will keep your current exhibitions etc as they are.
Only thing that will be overridden is misc settings as there are plenty of changes there.

Hi there Pekka,

I have just started to move accross to EE and am very impressed with its quality and the attention to detail you have paid.

Initially I installed EE1.22 but quickly moved to the RC version which is much much better structured.

My only critique at all (with a view to the structure) would be the seeming inability to segragate an exhibition into different hierarchies ('Rooms' or 'Sections') - thus allowing the exhibition creator to structure the actual progress through the exhibition for flow - just as one has the potential to do in larger physical galleries by controlling the flow of people through the exhibition space.

I realise it is possible to do using different exhibitions/categories, but in my view it is important to also structure individual exhibitions VISIBLY, internally and categorically.

i.e.
Exhitition 1
The Meaning Of Life
Section
Birth (Cat1)
The Early Years(Cat2)
The Early Years(Cat3)
MiddleAge(Cat4)
Old Age(Cat5)
Death(Cat6)

Just my two cents worth - but a great product regardless.

The image uploader will round off the product perfectly.

Well done!!

Regards

Jon
