What's the difference? I can't quite understand from the tech characteristics...

Is it speed only?

Doesn't the i9900 use two extra ink cartridges?

I think they've added red and green to the original 6 colors.

...correct, but it appears to be quite a bit more than that. I have a i9950 now, replacing a i9100 that I thought was the best.

The i9950 now spits 2 picoliter drops as opposed to the i9100 4 picoliter drops. This gives a finer detailed print and appears to use less ink.

The new red ink now gives real and deep reds, and the new green ink makes plants come alive.

The more I print with the i9950, the more I see that I didn't fully know I was missing with the i9100. I don't know how they are going to improve on the i9950 in the next generation Canon printer, but I'm sure they will find a way. :D

Ok here is a dumb question. Are the 9950 and the 9900 the same unit? With the 9900 being the US system and the 9950 being the European system?

Doh... Missed that.

Except for the new 2 cartriges, the cartriges are the same, right? They both use BCI-6 ink?

Ink tanks are the same, with the addition of Red and Green for the 9900/9950 BUT the printhead is different as noted by John_T above.

Yep. In the stores in Canada, I expect them to be about 800 CAD. I wanna live in NY. Next door to the BH of course

The difference between the i9900 and the i9950 is that the i9950 has a facitlity to print printable CD/DVDs and the i9900 doesn't. For some reason the US didn't want the CD/DVD thing.

Otherwise the i9950 and the i9900 are identical.

I saw the i9900 on Amazon.com for $420 + free shipping + $50 gift card for the next purchase at Amazon (use it for ink or paper). Of course you also have to buy a USB 2.0 cord for about $25. I have been thinking about this printer, too since I have an S820 and would like the larger format and additional colors.

Ok. So let's say that I (being in the US) ordered a 9950. Could I flash the firmware so that it was set for US measured pages instead of the A4 ...? I like the idea of the CD printing.

Of course it isn't like I have $450 just burning a hole in my trousers.

No need to flash anything because the printer is international. Besides, all sizes, etc. are in the printer driver and you can download any language or national driver you like.

For CD printing there is a tray, additional software and a selection under paper in the driver.

I've found only one trouble with this printer, and that is that it is so good you want to go out and buy new stuff and upgrades of everything else to match it. Wicked! 8)

Thanks for that info John. Now I know what printer it is that I am going to set my sights on.

I find the whole idea of the "print from CD" concept rediculous. Who'd wanna do that?

If I buy this printer, I'm gonna make sure that the pic is color corrected and is exactly what I wanna print. At 3-4 bucks per copy I won't just load them up from the cf card.

Doc, it's print ON cd. You know so you don't have to use those silly amatuer looking paper labels that stick on. That way people say, "Hey! That looks professional!"

Buy the i9950 from Europe... have the power rebuilt at an authorized Canon dealer so it can be used on 110V in the US (instead of the original 220V)... Then you will have it all.. CD/DVD printing as well..

Not true.. The i9950 has built in powersupply for 220V. The i9900 has 110V (for US)

Aaaaah. NOW I get it.

States are hopelessly behind

Grrrrr. I had not even thought about the power supply. I bet by the time the unit came back and the bill was paid I could have gotten a 9900 and an epson that could print on CD's and probably a Big Mac too.

I wonder if one of those "internation power converter" kits would work?

Of course. Why shouldn't it? :?

In my experience most equipment is 100-240V, 50-60Hz because it is more efficient to have one version. As I understand it in the case of the i9900/50, the US distributors demanded that the i9900 be stripped of all international factors and the CD print function to be more price competitive and/or more profitable for themselves, most likely both.

Check and see if the i9950 is available in Canada. I've heard Canada often has the intenational version of some equipment because of their British Commonwealth situation.

The i9900 printer is simply awesome! And fast!

Found a good source for Canon inks. The Filter Connection (2filter.com).
Lowest prices and free shipping on orders over $50. Also filters, pec pads, etc.
