View Full Version : 108 D70s stolen! or beware of cheap Nikons

I'm not trashing the camera, I just read on
dpreview that 108 Nikon D70 kits have been
stolen at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. The
advisory warns customers not to buy any
D70s and accessories being offered at
unrealistically low prices.
If this event devalues Nikon DSLRs (everyone
worldwide will be wondering if they're buying
"hot" goods) will this have an impact on the
prices of Canon DSLRs as well?

108 cameras are not a lot

It really isn't but a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things, so it probably won't flood the market much. But, it is a substantial amount, and I'd hate to have my shipment heisted. To some store owner or other recipient, insured or not, it represents a decent chunk of sales.

That's a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage home on 1/2 acre in these parts. OK, the bedrooms are small, but it'll handle a small family.

That's not very much, I know (I remember
reading somewhere that Nikon's production
output of the D70 is some 70,000 units a
month) even though prices are higher in Europe.
But the public perception of the event will make
people worried about buying used D70s, and
a percentage of buyers possibly staying away
from them. Hence, greater demand for Canon
in the continent?

In San Francisco, it will buy you a broom closet
in the better parts of town.

I find it hard to imagine that they could dispose of so many bodies without being tracked down
Hopefully the cops will nab 'em

They all have seriel numbers - the first one that registers his camera will draw the attention. And some buyer somewhere will register the "hot" camera, perhaps not even knowing that it is stolen. That person will be the start of a trail that leads to the thieves. Maybe.....

ROFLMAO!
I love the (partial) subject here: Beware of cheap Nikons.
Hmmm...seems to me that THIS board would always be aware of cheap Nikons.

That's half of a one-room doghouse in parts of Silicon Valley.
People run up a tab that big at their local Starbucks.

140k is the retail value, at cost, it is a lot less..................
Ill buy a bunch and re-sell it to those Nikon guys. Maybe do a little experiment with one. I will title it:
What Happens When You Drop a Nikon from a Penthouse Balcony!
then take a pic of that and put OWNED as the caption in big block letters.
hahah, just kidding, who am I to talk? The last nice camera I had was a Nikon.............

I think it would be fun to set it to continuous-shoot mode,
tape the button down and and let it take 144 pictures
as it drops from the penthouse. I'm surprised no one has
done it yet. The CF card will survive.
(Even less creative things have been done at
Whitney's biennial!)

At the current exchange rate, that'd get you a broom cupboard in my village in Hampshire... You would need $220,000 or so for a 1 bedroom apartment.

at the exchange rate, you would be able to buy a nice family home, in some parts of NZ (eg the south island where LOTR was filmed) you could buy at least 2 family homes :)

phaaa! I steal 200 nikons in my sleep, but it's pointless they're worthless. why didn't they steal something useful like a truckload of rebel kit lenses?

Unless they're smart enough to remove the serial numbers off each camera. Depending how they plan to sell them to the public.

This is what you could buy in my area. http://www.coldwellhomes.com/property.gsp?idProperty=1764981
Brand spankin' new home with a lawn to boot. Sure, the property taxes are 4th highest in the country here, but for the most part everything else is a bargain. :P
