I keep reading references to "Prime" Lenses. What is the definition of a Prime Lens?

Prime means one focal length. (i.e. 24 mm, 50 mm, 300 mm, etc)

A fixed focal length lens. Not a zoom lens

A lens with a single focal length. The 50 mm f/1.8 is a prime, as is the 135 mm f/2.8 soft-focus lens.
The 24-70 f/2.8 is a zoom.

A prime lens is a 1X zoom lens :)
