I have heard people post concerning the 300d hack, making the 300d a 310d. What is this all about? I should be receiving my 300d tomorrow, if there is firmware upgrade how to go about getting it. Thanks for any information.

It's a firmware upgrade (not from Canon) that provides a couple features not included in the standard features. Most important are mirror lockup and flash EC. I'd suggest making a mental note that it exists, and then forget about it until you have a legitimate need for it.

I haven't heard of it happening anywhere yet, but there are serious concerns that this could void your warranty since it's not Canon-approved programming.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I would assume it would void the warrenty. Almost like taking the camera apart. No biggie, thanks for the information.

It also provides (inaddition to FEC and MLU):

- ISO 3200
- 1/2 or 1/3 EV increments
- lets you customize the set button function
- dis/enable shutter release w/o CF card
- allows you to change the size of the embedded jpeg when shooting raw
- lets you select AF mode (slightly broken)

Honestly speaking, I have the 300D and I have installed the hack. Here is what I use:

- disabled shutter release w/o CF card (I believe that the default is enabled).
- MLU periodically for long exposure tripod based shots.
- periodically I will set the AF mode, but only to force one shot mode.
- I have FEC on my flash so I don't need it but it is nice to have just in case.
- I have the set button customized to change the image quality.

That said, I agree with Bellymondy; the rebel has enough features now to keep you satisfied and it would be extremely rare that you would need these features. I just like having all the options available to me because I am a geek.

Edit: My mistake removed.

- 1/3 EV settings (I think that 1/2 is the rebel default)

you got this wrong :D 1/3 is the normal setting. I tried 1/2 just to see what it's like and it was terrible in that when set to a position between two stops you couldn't see where it was

this one's best avoided.

My mistake, thanks AD. I have had the hack installed since the beginning so I guess the defaults are kinda blurry. I also thought it was default because on the custom functions 1/2 EV was listed as the first option.

Thanks again for the info. I might try the hack down the road. First things first is to experiment with the factory firmware and go from there. Then of course there is the question of how to get the hack and install the hack for that matter.

Easy as pie! Google it to find a download location -- the 300D tips and tricks website has a link to wasia's website. Download it, copy it onto a formatted flash card, insert in camera and follow directions. Probably a good idea to make sure your battery has enough charge to last through the firmware update.
