I have a question about selling my photography. Would it be better if I had my own web site or use one of the sites where you pay them to host your photos and they do the processing etc?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I use printroom. I have also used dotPhoto and been satisfied with both sites print quailty. Before I started my event photography I did some research, looked at several companies and went with printroom. It cost $99 to get a pro site but I talked to a couple of guys who had used it and were very satisfied with it. Their Pro Studio Manager converts and uploads a thumbnail in about 30 seconds and full size images in about 4 minutes or so.

Now for your situation what are you trying to sell? Is it just images of various things that you have taken here and there? Who is your market target going to be? You need a target to sell to. If it is just art prints your trying to sell, you might be in for a rough road. I talked with a huy who is an established photographer about doing just that several years ago. He told me that his online sales were pretty slow but, it was just a way for people who had visited his shop to buy a print that they walked away from while in the shop. Something like 90% of his sales were done in his shop, 10 % percent was from online and most of them had been in his shop within the past month before purchasing.

Regardless, I wish you luck and do your homework before you get signed up with anyone.
