Well, prepping for my 5th wedding on my own.. I went to the rehearsal last night. The priest drops a bomb on me. No flash at all! (even thought the forum the bride gave me had rules on it the said no flash during prayer, or readings. but it was ok during the rest) Yup, No flash at all... I was able to reason with him on the moving subjects and get flash allowed while there walking up and down the aisles. Funny because the Priest just tells me, Look like you will just need to drop the apature down to get the shots.. As im standing there already at 1/30, ISO640, f2.8. going hmmm... ok Gear, 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L IS, 24mm f1.4L (and hopefully a 50mm 1.2L, it should be delivered today, if not ) a quick shot to get an idea of the church... Any suggestions? Bride only wants to fill her album with 5x7 and a fey 8x10, im thinking we can react the 8x10 material.

Ramp up the ISO, forget about the noise.
Sharp and noisy is better than blurry and clean

Thats buckets of light. I've shot ceremonies in pratically half that light without flash.
Ramp that ISO to 1600 or higher depending on your bodies.

1/30 at 2.8 with an ISO of 640 is a lot of light .. if were at less than 1000 in the church then we feel very lucky and no flash once they are in is always the rule over here, we have had 1 ceremony in 20 so far where they said we could use flash.
That 1.2 will be very nice .... Just have to watch that razor sharp DOF !
good luck and be sure to post up some photos afterwards.

yep... ISO 1600 will do you just fine... I've shot plenty of weddings where the rule was no flash at all... In December, I have a winter candle light wedding.... no flash allowed...

Thanks for the encouragement guys. ISO1000 is good on my 30d, 1600 is a bit much, even when shooting to the right. I will try to keep it at 1000, I will not fear 1600 though. Your right noisy and clear is better than clean and blurry.

Shoot away at 1600 my friend. I do it all the time, and I don't own any noise software... and not a single bride has complained.

Any tips for controlling the noise at igh ISO? I guess besides giving it a good exposer?

+1.
Most people associate high ISO with noise. While this maybe true for extremely high ISO, if you exposed it correctly, noise should not be a problem.
One important thing though, you do not want to under expose at high ISO, pulling details out of dark pixels will give you a lot more noise.

Just expose correctly and noise is really not noticeable, especially in a 10x8. That's tiny!
Viewing at 100% on your screen is about 36-40" print size..... resize it (copy first)to 10x8" on screen and the noise disappears most of the time.

I agree, although I do have noise software, but I rarely ever use it. I've NEVER used flash in a church (besides the processional), anyway.

Agreed. 1600 is your friend!

The 5D, properly exposed, is fine with 1600 ISO. Having noise reduction software, I use it only in certain cases.
Take fast lenses, maybe a monopod, but what you listed, that's a lot of light for the 5D. :)
If it's a really noisy image, convert it to BW :)
Good luck

never shot in a church yet but i've definatly had some shots that needed higher iso but i've always been sketchy about even iso800 lol i think i used 1600 1 time when i was trying to get a shot of the moon. for some reason i always thought that if i'd shoot at any higher than 400 it would be a trash shot

The 30D exposed properly is fine with 1600 as well. I'd even shoot 1600 with my 20D. Just expose properly and you'll be fine.
That church has oodles of light compared to the chapel I just worked... Try ISO 3200 at 1/15 at f/2.8

OK its not a wedding picture but this is a picture that I have taken tonight of my daughter jumping her horse in a very dark sand school
30D,ISO 3200, 110mm, f2.8, 1/250 with flash admittedly and with a canon 70-200 2.8L
Don't be afraid of a high ISO as this picture will print very nice at 7x5.

The noise is much more often associated with low light and deep shadows, than high ISO. Yes, if there IS noise, the high ISO will amplify it. But if you expose properly, there will be plenty of light and little noise. Most noisy images are shot with high ISO AND very slow shutter speeds and little available light. But if the image you posted is representative of the venue, you have nothing to worry about. Crank up the ISO, expose carefully and generously, and enjoy the relatively noise free images.

I do alot of high ISO work for sports, and with my XT I HAD to expose +1, with my 30D though I find that + anything is too much. Often at zero I think it is overexposed...

Never worry about noise on Canon gears :)

Yeah this is definitely one of those situations where you just have to trust in your investment. There will be plenty of other things to worry about, but you invested in that camera body and those lenses for a reason, and the DiGiC II sensor is a tried and true soldier in the noise field. So like everyone else says, crank that ISO up and get busy :)

95% of my weddings are no flash weddings, I shoot at f2.8 all the time and at ISO800 if I have to. (I did order the Nikon D3 so I can shoot at 1600 and 3200 without worry) Trust your gear!

As mentioned earlier, if you do get you 1.2, your might want to practice with it first as the very shallow DOF will cause you to miss your point of focus very often until your used to it.
At least this has been my experience with the 85L.
Also agree with all the above --don't sweat ISO if you nail the exposure.
