Just wondering how many photographers out there also own a video cam. I, myself, own one but I don't use it that much. It's mostly just to shoot the kids running around.

I have a video camera, it's a canon & has "L" glass and I don't use it !
It was a good idea at the time.

I don't do it but I have a friend who does. I helped him film a wedding and I used a Canon GL1 as his backup camera while he did the main filming with an XL1. I found it pretty interesting and fun, but I think I'll stick with still photography. :D
BTW, I really liked both cameras!

still definitely.
there is no way a video footage can have the same impact as a striking still image, IMO

Mmm... I've got a nice little digital video camera somewhere... was damned expensive too... I never seem to use it nowadays though. The "post processing" required to produce a useable DVD is just too much hassle and it takes too long. One of my "waste of money" purchases.

If, on a scale of 1 to 10, I rate the fun I have with Photoshop CS as a 5, then I would definitely rate the fun I have with Adobe Premier Pro and Encore DVD as a whopping 10!
Shooting video without taking the time to edit the footage and authoring a DVD is like taking pictures without taking the time to edit in PS (or similar editor). I must admit, thought, that editing video is a LOT more time consuming than editing stills, and this is not even including the time it take to render the assembled clips and sequences. But it's a lot of fun and very gratifying when you view the finished work on a big screen. :D

Depends on what you mean by "fun". I call it "pain". ;)
I've had my DV cam slightly longer than my 10D. I've shot 12 tapes which is about an hour a month but so far I've only made 1 DVD. It took forever to complete and was a big relief when it was done.
Both photo and video editing requires skill but I think video editing requires more talent and creativity. I think in photography, the talent and creativity is more in the shooting rather than the editing.

Can't agree with you more. That's the reason I would NEVER think of doing videography for a living. Once deadlines come into the picture, then it can get to be a REAL pain! :)
BTW, I think the "garbage in, garbage out" rule applies equally to both photography and videography. But I do agree that you have more leeway in terms of creativity when editing videos.

The exact wording applies to me, as well
I got a nice Panasonic miniDV cam after doing some of the 320/200 30-second videos with my G2.
Cost about as much as a cheap 'L' lens :?
I keep using my G2 a lot. I don't use the cam at all. There's just not that much fun in it.
Best regards,
Andy

It has its uses . . . Given my druthers, I'll be using a still cam. But for catching the dogs romping, or our team performing, I'll use the ZR. Still, I think I've got more exposure time through SLR shutters (film & digital) than through the video cam.
