I really like the second one. Great composition, the sky looks great, and I like the horse's expression. I dont like the first as much - I can see what you were trying to achieve, but I think its too centred or something.

Both of them need to be rotated less than half a degree clockwise. The big poblem here is the two vastly different levels of color saturation. In both cases, more the second, the sky is a beautiful fully saturated turquoise color. Everything below the horizon looks washed out, in comparison.
At first, I thought the solution would be to select everything but the sky, and boost the saturation. After looking more at the subjects and the overall mood, I think a monochrome treatment might be the best idea with these.
I tried a little mono tweaking to show you what I meant, but the file you posted (no 1) is of such such high compression (hidden jpegging in the sky) that I couldnt do anything with it. Please post a higher res version with less compression and I give it a try.

I understand what you are saying about the washed-out color, but that's how it really looks. You need to come out to New Mexico to understand the light and color here. It's a little odd when you're used to thick green forests and rich brown earth.
Georgia O'Keeffe often talked about the unique light out here and I can't argue. It took a long while to adjust my style to make my photos look true to life.
Funny story: I did a shoot at White Sands and had a photo lab print the photos and they turned the sand this odd tan color and when I picked up the pics the guy that printed them said, "Those are beautiful pictures of White Sands." Dude, WHITE Sands! That's why it's called that! Even New Mexicans don't seem to get that.
Anyway, to satisfy curiousity:

But it just doesn't do anything for me.

I've lived in Albuquerque all my life (expect for the school year for college) and must say the colors looking just right for New Mexico. They don't look spectacualar when you are used to richer earth tones, but those photos definately capture our ranchland.

I like the one of the horses, the other doesn't grab me, but the composition of the first is nice.
