To cut a long story short

I have on my way a Sigma 500 DG Super, and I have been offered a Canon 550EX for a very good price (2nd hand) not the question is, should I purchase the 550EX so I can have a 2 flash setup

Or purchase the Canon, and sell the Sigma, or not buy the Canon and sell the Sigma and get a 580 EX II now Canon has the rebate on

As I am relatively new to flash photography, I am wondering whether I will be better keeping the Sigma, getting the Canon too and a good Light Meter and experimenting away :)

I like the idea of a home made light ring too, which may benefit from two flashes

I would also at some like some umbrellas / softboxes in the future

To be honest, I have a Sigma 500 DG Super, and am not at all satisfied with it.

My suggestion would be to sell the Sigma, and get the 580, if you can.

Can the Sigma fire 420s and 430s?

I have the 530 Super and the 550EX. With mine I can control the 530 with the 550 as master but it don't seem to work well the other way around. I've heard that 2 sigmas work well together but not having 2 I can't tell you.

Stay with Canon for flash. Buy that 550ex. :)
