A few NC members ventured out this weekend to the air show at Pope AFB in Fort Bragg, NC. I thought it would be great to have a thread to display some of our images from the trip. I will post some of mine tomorrow as I just got back from a long (5:30 am to 11 pm), but wonderful day. It was overcast the entire day until the Thunderbirds came out. It was like the sky parted just for them. I shot almost 7GB! with the 100-400 Chris and I rented, the 70-200 w 1.4 TC, and some shots with the 17-70 Sigma.

So let's see them guys!

Okay, so you don't have to be secretive anymore...where'd you rent the 100-400mm locally?!?!

Can't wait to see the pics!

I had a great time yesterday meeting up with you guy's. Guess it's good I'm thick skinned and can take C & C because I proably will get some here with my shots, but hey I had fun.

Here is the T Birds formation coming at us.

It wasn't local. However, Biggs Camera does rent the 100-400 but for way more than what we paid for a week.

What does Biggs chare for one?

Canon Rebel and Canon 75-300 1.4 - 5.6 I got the camera two weeks ago and bought the lens Wednesday at Peace camera in Raleigh. I really don't know what I'm doing right now but I sure had a lot fun trying. The worst part of the trip was waiting for a bus to get back to my car, waited in line 1.5 - 2 hours.

Yeah, the wait sucked but it was all worth it in the end. I think everyone had a great time. I've got about 500 or so shots to go through so it will take me a while to find some of my favorites but this one is one of them so far. I really like these vintage planes. These guys really take good care of these old planes.

I think it was like $35/day plus late fees and stuff like that. I can't remember how much it was for a week. The one we rented was from lensestorent.com and it was $62 for the week and that included shipping.

Thats a F15 and you need to use a longer shutter speed to get some prop blur.

Keep the shots coming guys :)

I can assure you that we tried the longer shutter speeds with little success. I either had good prop blur and blurry subject too or no prop blur with sharp subject. It's been several years since I shot an airshow. I'm still learning but I know the prop blur for me was a challenge.

What speeds exactly were you trying? I find some people including me at first try to start to low, when I started using 1/320 I did much better.

Like I mentioned before, the RenFest opened up this weekend. It goes on thru November. This is a great place to practice candids and other portraits. Enjoy my link here:

I understand what what you are saying RCoulter but I have only had the camera for two weeks and with the overcast skies and the fact I was not sure what I was doing I decided to shoot most of my shots in the sports mode. Hopefully I can gain some experience and try more settings the next time.

Keith those are some really nice shots, especially when you factor in how long you have had the camera.

I have uploaded all my shots to my computer but have only just browsed through them all so far. i hope to get some up later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice. I thought 1/200 - 1/320 would have been slow enough too but for most shots it wasn't. I had to slow way down which yielded blury images. I will post a few of the better ones that show the prop blur at various speeds.

Here are some of mine (just a quick bunch with minimal editing). This was my first air show and first time shooting any aircraft really. I had a blast and can't wait to go to another one. Hopefuly more pics to come later.

Those are very nice Mike. You should be proud of them. They are very sharp, have great color, and the exposures are dead on.

Thanks Josh. I am very pleased with the shots I got. I only have a few that need to be trashed because of mis-focus, some because I cut off the plane(s), and a couple due to an errant speaker or person's head making their way into the shot.

I think they turned out pretty good considering your expirerence level.

We enjoyed the show too. It was nice being able to put a face with a screen name.

Looks like some of you were the group I was standing there with (Mike maybe). I have some of the same shots from the same angles. It was a good show.

I couldn't get the prop blur right either. Maybe it was the difficult lighting in that cloud cover, I don't know. All my shots stopped the prop.

Shot #1 is fantastic! You have a 100% of that?

The prop blur or lack of is sort of disappointing but, great shots non-the-less

I still have over 700 shots that I haven't even processed (not that I am going to process them all). I hope to post more later this week.

Jerry, were you there with your wife/girlfriend? Hat, goatee, glasses? I remember seeing a guy with an xxD camera with grip and 70-200. If that was you we should have spoke up. :o

I like the shots you posted. I had a heck of a time with prop blur in flight. Some are good but several were blurry. It was much easier as they taxied down the runway. :p

Yep that would be me and my wife with my 30D. With that damn speaker right in our ear, we probably couldn't have heard each other anyway. I should have brought ear plugs just for that speaker, the planes weren't bad.
