I would love to find out how I would go about shooting college sports. Do you need to work for a newspaper to get access to the sidelines to shoot?

Any information is greatly appreciated. I want to shoot college football here in Utah just so you know. And I want to see how I can get access to the sidelines to do so.

Thanks

It depends what team you want to photograph. At my school (University of South Carolina) you must work for the press and apply for credentials before the season starts. However for a smaller team it may be easier. Your best bet is to work for a magazine or newspaper.

Contact the college's Sports Information Director (SID). He/she will tell you requirements for obtaining credentials.

I will just add that you will need to add to the lenses you have. I shoot high school sports and use a 70-200 f/2.8 lens with a 1.4TC. I have to remove the TC for night games. This lens is the least you should have and it is too short for some shots. I plan on getting a 85 f/1.8 for use indoors. Right now I use the 70-200 and a 17-50 f/2.8 indoors with a 580ex flash to add fill light. However there are some schools that do not allow flash. Best of luck.
