If you could get a regular Sandisk 1 GIG card for 145 or an Ultra II for 190, which one would you get? If not these two cards, which card or cards would you buy for 200 dollars?

The answer depends on your camera and how soon you plan to upgrade. I use the Ultra II in the Mark II. The regular is fine for the 10D and 300D. Check out:

Without reading the link to a "book", are you saying a regular flash card is fine in the 10D and 300D? If this is so, I might have to disagree. Although there might be a misunderstanding here.
I shot a wedding a few weeks back. I had a Lexar 12x 256 meg card and a regular Sandisk 256. The Sandisk was unbelievably slow. I have also read that cards beyond 12x are pretty much a waste as the 300D cannot utilize the speed.

I have a regular Sandisk and two Ultra II 256mb and to be honest I have not noticed any differance in my 300D during picture taking, downloading using a card reader is faster though.

So you're saying " Don't confuse me with facts"? or " I don't have time to read for myself?" Rob Galbraith has compiled the most comprehensive CF card database that is contiuously updated.
The Ultra II is 1.3 mb/s and the regualar is 1.06mb/s. Is the difference worth more money? That's up to you. The major bottleneck in the 10D is the buffer.

FWIW, I was in Fry's today (7/31) and they had the regular Sandisk 1GB CF at $129.....
They also had regular PQI 1GB cards for $129 with a $30 rebate.

A lot of how we use our cameras makes more of a difference than anything. I have a 10D and I have both the 1 gig SanDisk Ultra II and the SanDisk non-Ultra CF cards. I have been shooting fast action Ring Sport and herding this weekend and I have noticed a difference in empting the buffer and dumping the card to my Image Tank G2. The Ultra II is faster than the non-Ultra CF cards I have.
This is going by how I use my camera and CF cards in real world conditions for me. I paid $173 which included shipping for my 1 gig Ultra II and I think I'm going to pick up a couple of more.

That's not what I'm saying at all and I don't argue what Rob Galbraith has done. You posted a link to literally pages of reading for a simple answer. It isn't until page 2 of that link that I found the stats on the cards in question. If they're on page 1 then I must have over looked them. I certainly didn't see where you got your figures. From what I saw Sandisk was the 2nd slowest card out of all the ones tested which only confirms my findings from my own experience. It's a slug! The Ultra II is considerably faster. So are most of the other cards listed, but yes, the Ultra II is a better bet.
One thing I do agree with that you said, is what I had already touched on, the 10D/300D's buffer speed doesn't allow for much faster cards than 12x.

If you click on the link and then the CF Database pulldown menu, then on the camera model you are interested in, you get a table for all major CF cards.

I think an important factor has been left out of this equation....the regualr Sandisks are a 5 year warranty and the Ultras are lifetime....That tells me something about quality and reliability which is important to me. Speed may be a factor for many of you but reliability is more important to me and the Ultra II has both speed and the company thinks its more reliable than the basic card.

What do you need for proof for their lifetime warrenty?
I bought a 512 Ultra II card. No difference in the camera. Reads and writes faster in memory card reader though.

I think that the only proof you need is your sales receipt.
