These are nice pictures Sharon, I especially like the second one with the head
turned toward the lens.

Thanks Karen.....I have no idea what the difference might be other than the black capped one's aren't this far south. They both look pretty much the same according to my eyes.:D
Thanks Bob it's taken me weeks and weeks to finally get a shot of them. They're the babies that the resident pair raised this year. They're about half the size of their parent's which I know is hard to tell from these shot's... The tube feeder is standard size and they look like they could fit through the opening where the seed's are :D

Nice piccies of a cutie!
Difference between a black capped chickadee and a carolina chickadee is the wing covert. Notice the covert of the wing (shoulder) is gray, while in the black capped variety there's a white tuft on the wing covert (shoulder) as seen in this pic:

Also this page explains the range and difference as well...

Thanks Kolok....I've often wondered what the difference in the two were :)

Nice shots Sharon. And to make it worse, up here, they interbreed to make a third species, a hybrid. There really is no way to tell them apart. :)

Thanks Mitch :D Next to the hummer's, these are my favorite birds. Love to hear them calling to each other, just need to figure out a way to slow them down a little when they fly in for a bite to eat.

Yes, WHICHEVER ones I get here and there are a lot...they come in, get one sunflower seed, and take off to go eat it. Very fast! :)

Karen.....I have the nicest little pile of sunflower seeds under this tube feeder and watching them this afternoon I now know why. Seems as though as they get one seed out and it's not the one they want they just drop it on the ground and reach in and get another. I watched one of them this afternoon drop 6-7 seeds on the ground in search of that perfect sunflower seed that he/she felt like was good enough to fly off with and eat. And they are almost as quick as the hummer's when it comes to darting back and forth grabbing seed. :D
Then there's the family of racoon's I have that shinny up the pole of my wooden feeder in the wee hours of the morning......not to eat the seed.... just to empty out the tube and scatter the seed everywhere. Their muddy little footprints are all over that post.

I recently posted a black-capped chickadee shot only to learn it was actually a Carolina chickadee instead. I looked them up in the Peterson Field Guide and STILL don't know the difference.
hey Sharon, have you played with a program called NeatImage? It's a free download for the demo plug in and is fantastic for cleaning up noise while it sharpens. A lot of my bird pix are noisy and cluttered and I've found that it's a godsend for that problem. Here's an example, and I hope you don't mind that I worked over your first shot.;)

Wow....that really makes a difference :D Thanks
I was looking at that program the other day and trying to decide between it and noise ninja. You've made my decision for me, I'm getting it today. Thanks again

I'm SOOOOO glad you weren't ticked off about the photo alteration I made. Some people take that kind of thing as some sort of insult, but I'm very happy someone tinkered with one of mine to show me the benefits of that program. It's a little tricky to figure out on your own, but if you go through the operating instructions one step at a time it will really improve grainy or noisy shots. I ended up going back through all of my pictures for clean up copies and it makes an unbelievable difference with underexposed shots. Glad you aren't upset!;)

Shar-I got this program also (thanks to my brother's advice (Village Idiot)) and it does make a huge difference. That shot he tested for you is much improved with the neatImage.

Villageidiot, do you mes with the controls on NI. I just use the defaults. If you mess with the controls what do you do?

I use the default settings too as I have never gotten a decent outcome after playing with the sliders. Other times when it can't get a good default reading, I click No and move the box around to another spot then go ahead and use it. Some times I get the bird feathers all smeared and you can then go to Edit/Fade Reduce Noise in CS2 and slide it back off 100%. Sometimes that's good enough. Or, I use the History Brush to go over the bird and leave the rest. ;)
The instructions definately aren't very clear though.

I'm not sure we should clutter up Sharon's post with this nonsense, and I'm certainly not an expert with NeatImage or any other computer program, but I might have more experience with it than some. Here goes... if you can't get a uniform area with the "auto profile", just skip ahead and click on "noise filter" settings and then hit "preview" to see the adjusted area within the box. Adjust sliders (luminance/chrominance channels) to see the corrections (you can click to see "before" and release for "after") which gives you an idea of what to look for. If you can't get a pleasing effect, just close the program and move on. I rarely use the default settings, preferring to move the sharpness almost up to the max setting. It works for some shots, doesn't on others. PMessage if you want to continue discussion. Sorry Sharon for the interruptions...

I'm SOOOOO glad you weren't ticked off about the photo alteration I made.I'm glad you DID alter that shot :D I need all the help I can get with my photo's. I went right over to the Neat Image site and bought it.
And keep posting in this thread tips about the program...cause it's helping me to learn how to operate it and understand how it works :D:D

Sharon, you can always private message to my address if you have a question. I didn't purchase NeatImage, I just use the demo plug in. Works fine for me, and I don't do anything professional with it, so they're cool with that, too.
Looking forward to your posts! This should clean them up for you.
