I found on the web, while browsing one of the vendor's page on rebates - they must have placed it there early by mistake. I also found the vendor listed a 5D for $2299 before rebates, so I'm waiting until Oct. 15 and see if I can get $600 off from that price -> $1699!:)

I'm guessing that double rebates on 5D is to flush out the 5D inventory. The PMA 2008 will be on Jan 31 - Feb 2, so I expect them to announce 5DmkII or 3D/7D as the replacement then. I am conflicted as to whether to wait for the 5D replacement, probably with higher resolution and 14-bit sensor, 5 fps, plus better focusing, but at $3200 MSRP; quite a bit more than $1699 after rebates.
Also, may be Canon getting ready to replace 70-200mm f/2.8 series and 24-70mm f/2.8 too - I think PMA 2008 will be very exciting!

If they replace the 24-70 2.8 with an IS version I think the lens might be too heavy.I mean it already is pretty heavy for what it is.

I wonder if the new IS mechanism - much simpler than prev. gen - is much lighter??

Canon Fall Rebates
Bob Atkins , Oct 16, 2007; 02:59 p.m.
Canon do have a fall DSLR rebate program, but only for certain camera/printer combinations.
You can get $500 back on a 5D plus PIXMA 9000 or 9500, $200 back on a 40D/XT/XTi plus a PIXMA 9000 or 9500 and $100 back on a 40D/XT/XTi plus an MP610 or 970 printer.
Canon are a bit slow in getting the info on their website though. They do list participating dealers (http://canon.rebatestatus.com/configurations/CANON/storelist.aspx) but as yet don't have the details of the program on their site.
Some vendors have links though (e.g. http://www.adorama.com/pdfs/rebates/icapp90005d_011208.pdf)

I would think that Canon will eventually put out some kind of 2007 fall rebate schedule for the USA since they have done so for Europe and Canada. They have some real crafty marketing folks and figure that by playing games with the release date of the fall USA rebates they will get some people to give up and go ahead and order now. I suppose professionals would have no other choice. But the rest of us do and we probably make up the preponderance of the market. You know that they are monitoring sales so the best way to accelerate the rebates is to not buy anything until the rebates appear. Canon is in business to make money----they will get the message.

My price point is that which includes the rebate(s). No rebate, no sale. Simple.

Judging from the posts I'm reading on this and other forums, Canon's marketing folk aren't just clever - they're also right.
I'm kind of shocked at the number people saying "I gave up waiting, I ordered x yesterday, got tired of waiting for the rebates."
I'll buy used glass in the interim for the right price, but I'm waiting on anything I intend to get new (like the 40D and one or two other lenses) until I see what fall rebates are available, period.

Some people are more willing than others to separate themselves from their money. I have other hobbies. Guess, I'll just get some more woodworking tools in the meantime.

Looks like you can get a 5D now for a steal. The 30D isn't bad either.
I would bet that someone could buy a few, then sell them after the rebates are over to make a good $500-$700 on a 5D. That would be assuming they had no idea the 40D is out, nor the 5D Mark II is coming.

I can't believe that Canon won't come out with something shortly that will look like the Canadian rebates. It's hard to believe they would do anything less (the exchange rates on currency are pretty similar right now). Who knows, they just found a fix to the Mark III issues and maybe they'll include the III in the US rebate and were holding back. Probably not, it'll be a hot item that they don't have to give a discount on to sell, but we can hope. The 5D should be a great deal though as they clear out the inventory for the next upgrade.

I have no idea what the street price for Canon camera equipment is in Canada but I just compared the Canon Canadian rebates to the Canon USA rebates for fall 2007. And I note that the current exchange rate is roughly $1 US equals $1 Canadian. For a 70-200 f/4 IS USM, US rebate is $75. Canadian is $200 (they have double rebates if you buy more than one rebate item). The 100mm Macro rebate is $35 in US and $100 in Canada, the 17-40 L lens in $50 US and $150 in Canada. Looks like US customers are getting ripped off. And there are no bodies on the US rebate schedule.

Vistek.ca currently lists 5D body at CDN$2799 (http://www.vistek.ca/camerastore/DigitalSLRCameras.aspx). Say you pay GST and PST on top of that (~15%), then send in CDN$700 rebate = ~US$2600. Of course, you'll need a Canadian address for that to work, and you MAY be able to claim back GST/PST coming back to US as a visitor (for purchases over $300/item I think). Only then it would bring the total price to US$2155, with no guarantee that Canon USA will service it during its warranty period. It's probably not worth the extra US$44 you save (i.e. buy in US for US$2199).
