I would like to make a mini studio in my house to practice..I will probably practice with self portraits or pictures of my dogs.

What do I need to get?
What room is best in the house and how much light will I need?
Where did you get your backdrops or what did you use?

I have a tripod and all of the camera gear, but I am looking for advice on the actual set up.

Thank you!

Get a single Alien Bee B800 light and a couple of panel reflectors.

More natual light the better, or as little as possible; larger space the better, and higher the ceiling the better.

Backdrops - I'm a fan of clean paper backdrops, but others like cloth. Just depends on what you shoot. 9' rolls if you can fit them.

Thanks for your help! :) Where do you buy all of your equipment? Online or is their photography places that are good for backdrops and lighting?

Try to pick a South facing room with nice windows and sunlight if you want natural light. As mentioned the larger the room the better - I use my living room and shoot from my entry way to marginally get enough room for my taste.

And as to where to buy,
try
BHphotovideo.com (the store to compare to )

Alienbees.com (for studio lighting and acessories )

Adorama.com (same as BH only not quite as big )

Keh.com (more used camera equipment then BH)

and there are many more.

I'm mainly via B&H and Adorama, but also hit Amazon often.

This should really be in the Small Flash and Studio Lighting forum. You'll get many more hits and responses.
