View Full Version : Ebay 1D's for cheap $$$?

MrEWorm
20th of July 2002 (Sat), 10:21
I see several 1D's listed on Ebay from Australia. The price in US $$$ is very low. Is this a ripoff? If a deal looks too good to be true is it?

I've been going the rounds at Camera stores just to see what a D60 looks like, and feel it in my cold clammy hands. I can't find one anywhere. The local Wold does have a 1D, feels awesome, but at $5500 I find it is out of my universe.

They're scam artists. They only would use Western Union for wire transfer. The ones you see bidding on those scam auctions are ebay employees so that the regular joe doesn't get scammed.

I went through eBay and bought my Brand New D60 from some dude in Poland. I was very leary, so I kept constant contact with him. I paid $630.00 US Dollars for it, and it was the full US style kit. He turned out to be very honest. He runs his own elctronic store, though the inventory is not deep it is all quality for cheap. Their currency is the Zlotty. Though I only paid $630 in US, it was $2,900.00 Zlotty. So I know where I am shopping for now on.

hmmm. . . . the Czech currency is the Koruny and the current conversion is 1 USD for 29 CZK

I don't know much about currencies or exchange rates. I was after a D60 and after everyone else in the world had them backordered or for nearly $3,000 and found this guy. Like I said I was leary mostly because of the price. Then I e-mailed him and he said that he makes a fortune off the US dollar because of the difference with their exchange rate. He is selling a brand new Kodak 760 on a Nikon F5 body for $499. That is a $6,000 plus camera in the states. Now that makes me leary again, but I have had good experinces with the fella.

His name is Pawel and his e-mail address is herve8442001@yahoo.com
He also has another way to get in touch from his store: sales@electronic-store.net
I am not sure is his store address will work, I looked it up in some search engines but was unable to connect, he had to link it to an e-mail for me. Like I said he does not have much, but the quality and price is good. Good Luck!

Para5063 - The polish currency is the Zloty. The current conversion rate is 4.026 Zloty per dollar.

The Polish fellow has been listed on EBay for 4 days, the fellow who is referring him has been a member here for 2 days. I emailed both of them. I hope to speak to the fellow who is referring him. I can always cancel my Ritz order, if they email back.

JR92

Yeah, I just seen that. I got mine through him via eBay in a Buy it Now auction. That price on the Kodak makes me wonder if it is new, but if not it can't be that old. 6.3MP cameras have not been out that long. I sure wish I could save money like I spent it!

JR92

I suppose I am the member. This past week has been my first time ever purchasing items on eBay. So far the experience has been good. I have purchased the D60, two Sigma Lens, two batteries and a BG-ED3 grip for the camera for a grand total of $2012.00. Not too shabby. Anyway if you want to get in touch my e-mail address is reynolds@sisqtel.net

No I made it all up to make friends on this forum, yes I did purchase one for $630US. If you look above you will see that the person who sold it to me got a handful of money when the currency conversion was broke down. I have tracked the shipment and should receive tommorow. So call me a fool, but when I get it I will call you jealous.

The polish guy is on EBAY again. I have tried emailing 3 different addresses and have recieved no answer...

Using a different user name than the one JR posted here. I guess he didnt' like the one negative comment calling him a fraud.

Also selling a d-30. I am real leary. Why a private auction? Could it be so people can't warn the people bidding? Or maybe it is so people can't see some bidding with names like "Iseeathief"...

JR emailed me. He is a straight up guy. I don't doubt his integrity. I guess we will all be waiting until he gets back to verify his package. If it is alright, I am sure there will be a lot of cameras sold out of Poland soon ...

LOL

I can appreciate that JR sounds like a straight up guy, but personally if I were waiting on an international shipment to be delivered the following day, I'd find some way to delay my two or three day vacation.

As I understand it, the US carriers (Fed Ex, UPS, etc) expect to collect the duty owed before they'll drop the package off. I'm sure JR must have someone at his home able to sign for the package and take care of the duty details...but I for one would be a nervous wreck while on my vacation!

I hope he gets his camera.

Private Auctions. The trademark of the typical ebay scammer.

Ebay shuts those down all the time. And yes, they make auctions private so the users bidding cannot be warned by people who have been scammed by that seller in the past.

David, how did you find all of this out? It will be helpful for me.
I think I just got taken advantage of. It was my first time ever dealing with an online-auction and I was being nieve. I guess I expect people to treat me like I treat them. I am too honest for my own good sometimes.
I learned a lesson and I hope I can save anyone else who deals with this jerk-off in the future. I will bet if I was a thief I would have a knew camera. In the meantime I just ordered one through a dealer and will now wait.

He is still in business. He keeps changing his alias. I think he is hacking into peoples accounts and filing under them. Hence the sunglasses by the email addy...

Ebay continues to close a blind eye to this problem. On the Ausy ebay you can file a fraud protest BEFORE you get taken and the auction can be removed...

I do a ton of business on Ebay all the time, primarily as a seller but also as a buyer.

There's some things i've learned directly and indirectly from my experiences there. This list is by no means complete, but covers most of my experiences. To date i've been lucky to not lose a single dime as a buyer or a seller.

1. "Private Auctions" for anything but pornographic material means the seller has something to hide. More than likely, he wants to keep people from warning the bidders on his auction that he is a fraud.

2. Using Western Union, Cashiers Check or Money Orders as the only forms of payment is another trademark, ESPECIALLY when combined with #1 above. Not only does he want to keep his bidders from being warned, he also wants a form of payment that allows him to take your money and deliver nothing in return with little or no chance of being caught. These methods of payment offer little in the way of traceability.

Also, WESTERN UNION HAS NO **ENFORCEABLE** POLICY ON WHO CAN PICK UP A PAYMENT. If you give them a name to use to "check to see if a payment is there" but not give them the passcode, they can easily make a fake ID that allows them to pick it up WITHOUT the passcode. NEVER USE WESTERN UNION! EVER!

3. If a high-feedback seller has been inactive for a long time then suddenly starts selling these high ticket items using one (or both) of the scenarios above, then that person has either hacked the account somehow, or PURCHASED the account at another auction. Yes, it IS possible to sell your Ebay identity after you've racked up 200+ positive feedback.

4. If a high-feedback seller has been recently active (i.e. has feedback left within the past 60 to 90 days) and all of a sudden wants **only** Western Union/Money Order/Certified Check when he HAS taken Ebay Payments/Billpoint/Paypal in the past, this is another indication that his account has been purchased or otherwise acquired.

5. Be careful with COD's. If a seller agrees to ship you something COD, do NOT pay ANY money up front. Doing so could mean you just purchased a VERY expensive brick.

6. Whenever possible, USE A MAJOR CREDIT CARD. They almost always reverse charges in cases of Fraud like this. DO NOT USE A DEBIT CARD WITH A VISA/MC LOGO THAT IS LINKED TO YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT UNLESS YOU KNOW FOR SURE YOUR BANK WILL DISPUTE THE CHARGE!!! Find out ahead of time what their policy is.

Can I put my Aussie two cents in. Just remember the old adage "When it sounds too good to be true, it is". On eBay Australia, a guy from an indeterminate country offered to sell me a D60 for $2,200 Australian (the going rate is $5,100 Australian). When I questioned him by email, he said he was a student from Bulgaria living in Australia although he wasn't in Australia at that time. As he had no idea how to write "A$2,200" - he put 2,200 $ au was a great indication that he had never lived here. As stated before, eBay Australia will remove "scammers" and also "anti scammers" when they hit legitimate sellers. I know this is "stable doors and horses" but it may help others who might be tempted by great deals. Conversely, I have sold two digital cameras on eBay, one to a guy in Melbourne and another to a guy 5 kms away. The first was a matter of trust. He received the camera which I shipped to him and then transferred money into my account (risky I know) and the second was a lot easier - cash up front. I knew where the first bidder worked and all his home address details so I did not feel it a problem. But I would never, ever buy from anyone overseas. Two words sums this up "caveat emptor".

Regards
Sheila

Nice photos. Now, I am just curious is Sheila your real name or is it a Mick Dundee/Paul Hogan 'handle'. I remeber in the movie he called all the girls he did not know Sheila. Kinda funny.. Anyway, I have contacted the our sheriff's department and they are contacting the local police in Anchorage, Alaska. Though the guy who scammed me said he was from Poland, he actually lives in the states. So hopefully they will charge him. Anything over $400 fraud in the US is grand theft and is a felony. I don't expect anything getting to me, but I hope they pound this guy.

Hi JR-

I wish you the best of luck, but I encourage you to not put too much weight in the WhoIs information. When you register a domain name, you can put whatever you want there. It's not verified.

In today's times, you can even just renew online by email. No longer do you have to wait for InterNIC invoices in the mail and things like that.

Again, I'm sorry for the trouble you had. Hopefully everything comes together regarding stopping this guy from doing this again....

JR92, I would thought eBay's safe harbor would have protected you in this situation. Also I notice the seller (klugatl) is still there although one of his seller comments are negatives. He has good feedback as a buyer. Anyway, he hasn't been banned.

Anyway, eBay's customer service has always been excellent and I've used it both as a buyer and seller. I think you do need to wait for some period of time and go through a series of actions but maybe all is not lost.

Good luck to you.

Yes, my real name is Sheila! I was born in England and I have rarely come across a female born here in Oz with the name! Fortunately, "sheila" is rarely used (except by Paul Hogan) now. A later two cents worth. Always check the "sellers details" as you may find that the location is not Australia at all. One guy selling D60s actually lives in American Samoa and appears to have a constant supply of D60.

--------------------------

There are several ways to do well on eBay.

First, read all the buyers' guides and information pages on eBay. They're excellent and the more knowledgeable you are, the more comfortable and successful your experiences will be.

When you're ready, start out small, just to get the feel of how it's done. Always check feedback and especially read the neutral and negative comments. If you're considering a more expensive item, you can ask if they'd accept escrow. Either buyer or seller can pay the fees or they can be split; it might be worth it for the peace of mind. Also, always, *always* pay by credit card, either through PayPal or one of the other payment services.

I will only buy more expensive electronic items from "real" dealers who sell on eBay. B&H sells there as do Ritz, Henry's (in Canada) and several others. They can issue legitimate warrantees and stand behind their products well and reliably.

The best single piece of advice I can give is COMMUNICATE. Some people are very quick to leave feedback without ever trying to work through problems. Most sellers are honest and try to give good service. A few aren't and that's why the safeguards are there.

Stay on top of the transaction; keep your emails and records. If you ever do have to make a complaint, you'll have full documentation. As you will read in the eBay information pages, there are several steps to conflict resolution. I've only had to use the whole battery of them once as a buyer and twice as a seller. Most times, the intermediate steps work to resolve the issue.

So. Try it out. Buy a Beanie Baby or something and see how it goes.

Good luck.

Gorham.

What about using a major credit card throught PayPal? I've read that the consumer is NOT protected in such a transaction. The reason being is that the credit card transaction happened between the consumer and PayPal and NOT between the consumer and the fraudulent third party.

In other words, because PayPal went through with it's part of the transaction, i.e., provided a transfer of funds service, a case of fraud cannot be made and the CC company will therefore not reimburse the consumer.

However, I've also read that each credit card company...and even depending on issuing bank...has its own policy on such matters. I've been meaning to call Amex and a couple of my other cards to ask, but haven't as yet.

Has anyone checked with their CC company? Has anyone actually been reimbursed for a transaction through PayPal that went to a fraudulent seller?

Thanks,

-Taz

When it comes to paypal, Just ensure 2 things:

1. The seller is *Verified*, meaning he has his address on file with Paypal.

2. The seller has a good number of transactions (the number after his email address that shows how many VERIFIED members have done business with him).

Even though TECHNICALLY you are doing business with Paypal, you CAN dispute any fraudulent charge with your credit card company. They WILL dispute it with Paypal (they HAVE to), and Paypal IS ultimately responsible for investigating the matter. They will in turn go back to the seller asking for proof that the item is shipped via a TRACKABLE means (UPS, FedEx) and ask for that actual proof. If they cannot obtain this proof, they dock the seller's paypal account the amount in dispute.

And yes, this has happened to me, and I did get my money back for an item that the person never shipped even after claiming he did.

Dear Randy,
The computer does comes with Microsoft Office Software. Regular shipping and handling 4-7 days delivery time is $19.00 USD. Total amount comes out to $1618.00 USD. I am sorry but I do not accept Money Order/Cashiers Check payments at this time. For payment I accept the following:

Bank to bank transfer - Can be sent from any bank. After I recieve scanned receipt of the transfer the product is shipped and you recieve tracking number by e-mail.
Western Union money transfer - Fastest way to send the payment. Send money from your local western union office. Visit www.westernunion.com for more information and to locate an agent nearest you. Package is sent out after I recieve the MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number) and the senders information.
Money Gram transfer - Works just like western union. Send payment from local money gram office. Visit www.moneygram.com for more information and to locate an agent nearest you. Package is sent out after I recieve the control number and the senders information.

Please do not forget to provide your shipping address.

Please note that all the fees associated with the transfer are returned to you in form of a check. The check is sent back with the product and is made out to the person who the package is going to. Reason for doing that is those are tax deductable and we need to have everything in the books. Otherwise we would just allow customers to deduct the fee from the transfer.

JR, you may be able to get Yahoo to shut him down if he doesn't return your money. Keep your emails and their headers and find the fraud dept. of Yahoo. His email is coming from something like bizmail.yahoo.com so they should be able to trace him down.

If you are a US citizen you can also try small claims court. I've only used it once, and I hope never again, but you can eat your adversary for lunch if you have good documentation and present the relevant facts to the judge. The legal system worked great for me the one time I used it and I got my check the day after the judge rendered his decision. The other side even had to pay the $30 filing fee and court costs.

Cheers.

Wish I'd known about this site before, I've just been scammed through eBay too for a D60 that was selling for £700 GBP.

For the sake of repeating a previous comment, never buy anything using WESTERN UNION, it is NOT a safe means for transactions.

The guy I was buying from claimed to be in Madrid Spain, borokemanuel@aol.com.

Also be aware that if someone selling on eBay removes an item after you have started communicating with them then it is probably a good sign that they are pulling a scam.

Hope this may help prevent the same thing happening to others. I've learned a rather expensive lesson and it's put me off buying online for anything over a few £. Just not worth it!
