View Full Version : Bogen 3001 Legs Question

I recently purchased a used set of Bogen 3001 legs and am very impressed with them to this point - light and yet provide good stability to my setup when mounted.
My question is that my set did not come with any documentation and I have a question. There is a threaded hole in between where two of the legs meet at the top. What is this hole for? It's too large of a thread to be an optional column tightening knob position so just curious what it might be used for.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Hello Bauerman,,
I believe the hole you are talking about is on the body(?) between the pivots where 2 of the legs mount, and threads in towards the center column?,
If so it is an accessory jack of sorts, Bogen / Manfrotto have a couple of strap accessories (one sort of a hand strap, and one shoulder strap) that have a corresponding threaded stud on a swivel to attach the straps to the tripods as a "carry" system.:D:D

Excellent! Thank you very much for the information - I was not even thinking in the strap category! I very much appreciate your response and time.

Does the threaded stud come with the tripod when it's new?
i.e. is it standard to come with the tripod when purchased new, or must it be purchased separately?

Thanks in advance for the help. This Manfrotto tripod strap (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=manfrotto+3044&N=0&InitialSearch=yes) comes with the screw-to-ring adapter to use in the threaded socket on your tripod.

The adapter comes with Manfrotto tripod straps and could probably be purchased from a Manfrotto distributor as a part. The adapter screws into the tripod's threaded socket and provides a sturdy ring for the strap to clip to.

I have seen similar straps from various vendors on the internet. From all indications I have seen, including now the B&H supplied Manfrotto strap you linked to, the screw-in piece doesn't come with the strap.
In this ad, the description says:
- Fits Manfrotto Tripods with Screw Heads
That implies the tripod must already have a screw head in place and it's not provided with the strap.

I have an older Manfrotto 055. I added 3/8 threaded stud to block up the hole, and a stick on bubble level.

I understand your tripod did not have the screw-in strap attachment point when you got it.
Did you buy it new?

No, I bought it used. I don't believe Manfrotto tripods ever came with the the screw in attachment ring. It was included with the strap when you buy it.
The newer Manfrotto tripods have a built-in ring so the newer straps don't include the screw in ring. You might be able to buy the ring separately. The part number is R055,349
My understanding is that the older Manfrotto 3044 strap includes the ring. http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-3044-CARRYING-LONG-STRAP/dp/B00009V3DG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1307153563&sr=8-3

The newer manfrotto tripods have a built-in ring so the newer straps don't include the screw in ring. The new straps DO include the adapter. See this page from the Manfrotto web site (http://www.manfrotto.us/product/8374.76885.76894.0.0/102/_/Carrying_Strap_for_Camera_Tripod). The descriptive text includes the line: Features an adapter for compatibility with all Manfrotto tripods.... which tells me that the adapter shown in the post above is included.

Good catch. I think you must be right. I never read the fine print.
I just assumed since the ring was not shown in the photos of the newer straps, it wasn't included.

Thanks for the research. It looks like some straps, at least, come with the screw-in eye.
That would seem to indicate the piece came with the strap rather than the tripod, but I wonder if it's possible it came with both.
Maybe somebody that bought an older Manfrotto tripod when it was new will happen along and could say for sure. If the current Manfrotto tripods have the eye cast into the shoulder piece, it's going to be harder to find out now.

Having purchased two Bogen tripods brand new (3221, 3236) almost 20 years ago, and having purchased two straps for them, I can definitively state the Bogen tripods did NOT come with the threaded adapter for the strap, the optional Bogen straps came with the threaded adapter integral to the strap's fittings.

Hi Wilt,
Thanks for confirming that.
Cheers.

My Manfrotto 3444 CF came with a strap, and the ring fitting. I got it at a store clearance though, so they might have put them together for display purposes.
