The local guys will recognize this fellow. He's the local celebrity that everyone has had the opportunity to photograph.
I only had a few minutes Sunday before picking up my son from the In-Laws; so I decided to try a LONG shot. (test the 500 with the 2X)
This was taken at Andrew Haydon; from the little island with the rocks on the shore and a bench. The heron was on the far side of the pond towards the river. (How far would you say that is guys?).
This is a full frame image, no cropping; just for the fun of it...
Comments/Suggestions more then welcomed...;)

This has great IQ for 1000mm with the doubler Ted. The EXIF says that flash was used....I'm guessing you have a better beamer for use at those distances :)

Looks very good Ted. Shouldn't this bird be wearing a collar? :)

For a just fun shot that came out nicely...How far is that? I wouldn''t even bother taking a shot of this bird from that distance with the 400...

i dont think it could be much better with this combo , i just looked at it in cs3 and your focus looks spot on , have you given any USM to this shot ?
I just gave it 100 at 03 and it really does sharpen up quite a bit.
Rob.

Rob. Thanks Rob; I played a tad with Curves to bring out a little contrast.
I will have to look at this when I get home; and try the extra bit of sharpening.
Thanks for the tip...Much appreciated.
