Proportions (or making an 8x10"print)
Images from Canon DSLR cameras always have the 3:2 ratio - eg 3504 x 2336 is 3:2 on a 20D. If you print this 10" wide that means it will be 6.66" high, or conversely if you print it 8" high it will be 12" wide. If you want a 8x10" print (or any size that's not a 3:2 ratio) you need to crop the image, which will discard pixels to make it the shape you want. Get the crop tool, enter 8in and 10in in the toolbar (or vice versa), drag the crop tool over the image, the hit enter or double click. If you try to leave this to the lab they'll crop where they think it should be, or worse, they'll do it automatically and might cut off an important part of the image. NB: baby cameras usually have other ratios, usually 4:3 or occasionally 16:9.

Taking from the FAQ's. If I do the part of the above paragraph that is bolded, will I only be able to make a 8x10 from this file?

If I'm giving someone a CD of images, do I have to make separate files based on size of a print so their pictures will come out correctly?

Yes. If they want to make a 3x2 from a file cropped to 8x10 they'll lose more of the images.

You could, or you could let them do it themselves. Consumer photo kiosks will let people choose how to crop the image. All images I supply to customers on CD are 3:2. If they have trouble cropping the image themselves i'll happily sell them a print.

Do most people just give someone a CD that are 3:2?

Just seems like it would impact your work if they printed a picture and their uncle was cropped out..

I would assume most people only give 3:2 ratio files. Would someone working with film cut each negative just in case someone wanted an 8x10? What if they want a 5x7, or a 3x4? It would take a massive amount of time to crop each image to each possible size, for very little benefit. This is why people are welcome to crop as they wish, or order prints if they don't know how to crop.
