The belkin does work. . . but it is slow (very) and eats up the IPods battery.
I tried it with a 2gig CF card and the IPod battery didn't last for the whole transfer.
:(
Tried the IPod as storage device, went with a differnt device (FlashTrax)

I have an iPod......somewhere.
I've barely used it for music, and never considered using it for photos. I bought it just before the Napster thing imploded, and never really got into it. Most of the peripherals that are currently on the market are for the newer generation units, and mine is 2nd generation, I believe.

You may want to look at Archos Gmini 220. Though it's not as slick as iPod, it does all that iPod does and more. The best part is that it has an in-built adapter for CF cards so once your card is full, you may just plug your card in the player directly (no external adapters required) and then transfer all the photos to this device. I have been using it for the past few months without any problems. It can also be used for browsing the photos, but I don't really use that feature much since it displays in monochrome and it obviously does not know how to handle RAW.
More info here (http://www.archos.com/products/overview/gmini_220.html).

I don't have one of the Archos mini.......but I have the older archos.......and for sure, it transfers much faster than the iPod. The iPod solution is a JOKE!!! for sure

I hear that the Ipod battery dies after about 2 or 3 years of usage and Apple DOES NOT cover the replacement in its warranty. You will have to pay for a new battery which from what I heard is very expensive. I just heard about this on a website a few days back so I cannot say whether it's just some made up story, have not had the time to look into it.

wow...glad I posted this
that blows that it cannot handle a 2gb dump on the battery...Belkin and sales descriptions claim the card reader is very fast...that pathetic
the new ipod with the click wheel just came out, would it be possible they might have fixed any of these issues? though I am doubtful

The new IPOD is marketed as having up to 12 hours of operation and improved menu operation over previous generations. Some pretty cool accessories being released for the new version of IPODS; makes it an intriguing item. However, though you can do data storage/transfer with the IPOD I haven't heard anyone say it's a great option. Moreso it's a nice option to have if you already own an IPOD.
I was stalking an IPOD but realized the cool factor wasn't quite as cool when I realized that for the same price I could get the following in an iRiver H120: Sure, it's not as sexy or have as smooth an interface but oooooooh look what it can do!
Plays over 600 hours of digital music*
Up to 16 hours of battery life
Supports MP3, WMA, ASF, WAV and OGG music files
Ultra-fast USB 2.0 transfers (up to 40 times faster than USB 1.0)
Integrated FM tuner
Backlit remote control with 4-line display
Built-in voice recorder
Intuitive music navigation
Real-time MP3 encoding (no PC required)
20GB of internal storage
Store or transfer files of any type
Extra-large, 8-line, backlit LCD
Rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery
Optical input and output
Upgradeable to future formats and features

yes, apple does claim 12 hour battery life from the newest iPod...also a battery pack is sold for it, but it uses the dock connection, so it does zero good for storage options

Truly great music player first and foremost. If you listen to a lot of music, and either have it already in high quality MP3 or are prepared to invest the time to convert your CDs, get one and you will not be disappointed (or buy belmondo's :)) - if it does nothing else in your ownership it can replace all your CDs and make them so easily accessible you wonder why you waited!
I use mine for backing up the files on my laptop (specifically my photos), which works very nicely and very easily. It's also quick as it genuinely uses firewire transfer (Powerbook G4).
The media reader is too slow to consider really at this moment in time IMO. Nice to have is you don't have a properly portable laptop, but not ideal.
As for the batteries, allegedly they do fail over time but I'm not sure there are any hard and fast stats that say that much. And it is user changeable at not that much cost...just a bit fiddly.
Like music - get one.
Not fussed about music - get a photo bank type product.

I love my flashtrax. When we travel, go camping etc and I take a lot of shots I can plug my carn right in and download it to the trax. The battery isn't wonderful but it's always lasted long enough for what I need. Nice screen to view the pictures one. Holds a LOT and (40gig now I think) and you can also hold/play music on it.http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000ZG0YA.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Sorry to say Mr Harry but yes I was that disapointed with the IPod and the belkin data transfer tool :(
I you want to find out yourself, I would be happy to send you the belkin device just for the price of shipping. I don't use it and need to get rid of some clutter

US Postal Service say $8 if I can convince them it is a letter size and 1 week or $18 and 4-6 weeks if they think it is a package.
Why it would cost more to take longer to get there has got to be a goverment conspiracy

You can have it work that way.....you just need the software...and the know-how....
I remember seeing a guide on how to get this done.
I know in the making of Lord of The Rings...they carried entire scenes on iPods at some points....

About the Belkin Reader: Briefly: iPod Good. Belkin Bad.
I am done buying products from Belkin. Design and construction are both poor. Griffin is the opposite. I am hoping Griffin will come out with a firewire speed reader.
