I work freelance and I'm trying to build up my business, which offers video and graphic services along with photography. I've already tried to post ads on free online search engines such as craig's list and put up various flyers around town. In addition I've contacted party planners and banquet halls for referral information. I've also attended a couple of trade shows. I've seen minimal results so far. I don't really want to try to find work as an assistant for an already established photographer because I feel it would be a conflict of interest. I have already spent years of my life working for someone else's company (doing video work) and I felt that my talents and skills were underappreciated. Outside of redoing my website to focus solely on photography, is there something else I can do? Be it with the website itself or marketing techniques? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think that word of mouth is/has been my biggest help. Can you do photoshoots for friends/kids/neighbors and offer a 5x7 as a thank you and in turn practice on them...different poses/locations/camera settings. Use those to build a portfolio. Have business cards printed (if you haven't already) and hand them out to everyone. Good luck.

Thanks, yes. I've build up my portfolio and have handed out prints for free. I'm still offering free session fees to "expand" my already expansive portfolio. Handing out business cards is almost becoming second nature.

In addition I've contacted party planners and banquet halls for referral information. I've also attended a couple of trade shows. I've seen minimal results so far. You've made "the rounds". When you have something new to show, make them again. And again. And...
It just takes time to remind them that you're serious.
You might do some work for a charity for the networking possibilities, & drop the free session fees, or you aren't going to get any respect as the "Freebie Gal" :D Outside of redoing my website to focus solely on photography, It's always a good idea to zero in on one thing, isn't it? OTOH, video & photography work together, so maybe a site for each, linked together.

Locally, Hockey players at the youth level want video. So, if you can find an ice rink, go there, talk to their management, see if you can get in touch with some coaches, offer DVDs for $29.99 per game.............
Here, video is sold the same way for playoff level youth sports, all outdoor sports, including Lacrosse and Field Hockey.
Coaches are easy to approach, they know all of the parents, off ya go.
