For off camera flash, I think this combo will work...
Connecting Cord 300 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=12267&is=REG)
Off Camera Shoe adapter (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=164267&is=REG)
Right? I sent an email to B&H, but I have yet to hear back. From what it sounds like, I can put my 550 on the shoe, connect the shoe to the camera with the cord, and be ready to go. Does that sound about right?

I think that you are also going to need the "TTL Hot Shoe Adaptor 3". That sits in your camera's hot shoe. The "Connecting cord 60 or 300" goes from there to the "Off Camera Show Adaptor OA-2", and you flash sits in that. I just got this information from page 114 of the 550EX's instruction manual.
I guess my inclination would be to just get the "Off Camera Shoe Cord 2". The extra connections of the two end modules and the connecting cord strike me as two more connections I'd have to check for failure. Admittedly if one of the modules failed you could just buy a replacement for that part, and with the Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 you'd just have to throw it all away. But the Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 is $50 (US$) from B&H and the "TTL Hot Shoe Adaptor 3", "Connecting cord 300" and the "Off Camera Show Adaptor OA-2" is $130.
I guess that if you really want wired off camera E-TTL then this would be the way to go, but it's use strikes me as limited, and expensive.

I tried using those two items and had no luck. I went back to the Canon EOS system booklet & read some fine print that states those accessories provide TTL or Manual flash control but are not compatable with E-TTL or E-TTL II. No automatic flash with EOS digital cameras.
Since I was using a 420ex & the 550ex I decided to forget the idea & use studio lights instead.
I also think you will need the Hot Shoe adapter stated by DaveG, good luck if you decide to go with the setup.

The Off Camera Shoe Cord 2 is the only cord that will provide full ETTL functionality. None of the other cords will work.

Ah bummer. Big bummer.
Well, while we're on the subject, I was lookin at Alien Bees as a studio strobe. I don't need anything real powerful, but I would like to have enough versatility to do key and fill, etc etc.
What brands would you suggest?

I have two Alien Bees & they work just fine. Getting ready to order a third but this will be a White-Lighting same family just a little better construction.
