I have never been so vulgar in my life, but I feel so uninspired lately that a complete change seems to be in order. Anyway here is my Gorillapod.

Well someone has to sit there.:D I know many do not like this gadget, but I use it all the time. Never wrapped around a pole, mind you. I use it for macro, for a table top tripod, and for those instances where I have no other choice.

That thing won't hold a 1 series. But I don't wanna suck, so I'm going to buy one at B&H, take a picture of it, and return it.

Yeah you are right. It does have some severe limitations. Well at least you are lucky enough to actually go to B&H. I am over 100 miles from the nearest horrible photo shop.

Can you use these things to secure a camera to a car door/window, for roadside shooting, or better to jusr use a beanbag?

I had my 30d+grip and 70-200 2.8 is on the gorilla and it held up just fine. Fine balancing act though.

I would think that would be a good application for it. Wouldn't put a camera and body on it, though I think.

Would be a good portable tripod for shots like he shows
rklepper
23rd of October 2007 (Tue), 21:02
Actually for my 30D with the 24-105 on it it is quite nice. Flexible and just as, if not more, stable than other portable type tripods. When I have used it I have been extremely happy to have had it. Most who do not like it have never used it.

What you need is what I've just bought from ebay. I'm not sure when it'll arrive. I bought this:

It's something I've often wanted because I often see the best views from my car window, when I have no tripod handy. It's great to stick in the glove comparment.

I use my SLR Zoom for additional support when shooting low down macro stuff ie me lying prone and supporting the camera with my elbows and the Gorillapod taking the weight of the lens and flash.
I attach it to the 180 Macro's tripod mount, push two legs together and fold the other out of the way, sort of like a mini monopod but flexible. Normally I'm hanging off of the rear end of this combo so the Gorillapod doesn't normally support this load on it's own.

How about a photo taken from a Gorillapod? I put my SD600 on it for this self-portrait back in February when I was hunting eagles with a 500 f/4. It was only about 20 below outside that day. ;)

Heh, this is totally off topic, but the Jeep in the photo above is a rental. Here's my Jeep, which is awesome for getting around in the snow, but not very comfortable for road trips:

Thank God nobody mentioned the Hummer.
When I repaired computers, I saw somebody's desktop wallpaper was their Hummer. They came over with very pretentious airs and insisted I took their computer from their Hummer while they pointed out it had leather seats. To me it was just somewhere to get the computer from. Anyway when we fixed their computer the desktop picture was their Hummer, parked outside a mobile home in a mobile home park. Looks like they blew lots of money on a junky car instead of buying a decent place to live!

Very typical in this day and age to have a nice car and crappy house.

When I'm using a tripod it's for slow exposure stuff, so my gorrillapod was barely ever used because it's just too bouncy for longer exposures.

25th of October 2007 (Thu), 06:17
You need to let any tripod sit undisturbed in order to work. If you bounce on any tripod...well you get the idea.
