Did some of you had this problems in this given configuration?
- stopping the camera
- reseting
- refuse to focus on central focus point.

No. My combination works perfectly in those regards. My only complaint is that the photos tend to come out underexposed when I attach my 2X, which of course requires manual focusing.

I have not used the 100-400 with my 300D but I have had my 10D lock up with it once only in 4000 shots. I had to take the battery grip off and put it back on to get it to work again. Been fine since so I guess it's nothing for me to worry about.
Not had it refuse to focus on the central focus point. The camera just locked up completely.

My 100-400 has locked up twice in many thousands of shots.
Both of those times I was panning but the IS was in mode 1 and had a fit.
Remove and re-connect battery and all was well :)

Most of the problems with the 100-400 are the result of dirty contacts. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser. If you already did that, never mind.
