i've convinced myself that the US rebates will be coming out, and if they are as hefty as the canadian ones (double rebate = 700 off a 5D), then i'm definitely gonna buy one.

the next question is what lens to get w/ it, to take advantage of the double discount.

my first thought is to get the 24-70L and sell my 17-55 EF-S (30D would be pressed into duty as a backup camera), but part of me is looking @ the 16-35L as a contender. i'd probably spring for a 15mm fish as well.

does anyone here use a 16-35L on a routine basis?

I feel as if a 16-35 is better suited for a 1.3-1.6x crop for concerts. Most "pro" shooters (if not all) shoot the 24-70 and 70-200 (Even with a 1.3 and 1.6 crop).

I cant think of a time that you would ever need 16mm on a FF camera at a concert. 24 is plenty wide for me and i have a 1d2n (1.3x crop).

i'm thinking small (~200 ppl capacity) clubs, where you are *right* against the stage. my 17mm wide end isn't wide enough at times on the crop. granted, that's ~27mm on full-frame, but still...

however, i think you are right that the 24-70 would get much more use, and i could always add the 15mm fish to the bag for the ultrawide shots.

i have the 17-35, but it's on the 1.6 crop. i think most of the clubs you shoot this range would be fine, even with the full frame. but i think the 24-70 is a more all purpose lens. if you are going to get the fisheye, then you should go with the 24-70.

are you not waiting for the mkII?

24-70 works really well on a 1.3 crop and I imagine it would rock on a full frame.

here's my devious plan...take advantage of the double coupons, if they actually materialize, so i can also get a nice FF lens @ some discount.

use the 5D for a few months, and dump it when the 5D mk II comes out. i'll probably come very close to breaking even (depending on what the MSRP is at that time, relative to what discount i got), and it will be cheaper than renting a body (i really want a 2nd body for a couple of upcoming shoots).

I'm considering the 35 1.4L if i get the 5D, you guys think that i'll be too restricted just using a prime?

depends on what your output requires...if you are shooting for a publication, you will need something longer for sure...

I could couple it with a 70-200 and 28-75 for now. Was looking at going the 5D route and was leaning towards the 24-105, maybe I should get the brick instead :p
