Tripod for 10-D

I'm looking to buy a tripod sturdy enough to securely hold a 10-D with a battery pack and the Canon 70-200 2.8 lens. I'll be doing some hiking with it but nothing too long, but I'd like it to be somewhat light. And I'd like to try and keep the price around $100 or less. Any suggestions??

Your price range is rather limiting, and I think most here would agree that you may want to try to increase your budget for such an important tool. I'd look at used Tripods because of your budget level. I hike with the Bogen 3001 pro tripod (model # recently renamed) with the 486RC2 ballhead. The 3021 tripod is widely recommended, but I got one size smaller for hiking. I got my legs used from B&H and the head new from them and am very happy with it.

Whichever tripod you get, I would recommend to put piping insulation around the top leg section. I used duct tape to attach this stuff to the legs. It might not look the best, but it adds padding and in cold weather (or hot) you won't be afraid to grap your tripod with your bare hands.

And if you get a tripod no bigger than the 3001 with 486RC2, then I would try to find a Razor scooter travel bag. I got mine at a 99 cent store and it is the perfect size to hold the tripod and is durable enough to hold the weight.

Clever idea. :idea: I will borrow it for the purpose of protecting the tripod from damage josteling the other tripods stored with it. The weather is pretty mild here.
