lot of towns do painted cows, horses, and dogs, as fund raisers, Several towns in Northwest CT decide to do Bears. This one was outside a package store. Go figure this is the first one I've photographed.

Farther along in my drive found a couple more, the Litchfield hills are full of them. This one is a real dapper dan, found next to the Speckled Hen Pub (notice a trend here? )

Ha ha ha ha
they are beautiful shapes and sights and must be a real surprise for anyone coming across them on the street Sandy.
you must have enjoyed taking these shots very much
can see you laughing and..... only God knows who saw you at the time
very interesting messages on them . lovely
:)
the bears show great characters. whoever made them put a lot of work into them. everyone must have a smile when passing on seeing them.
looking at them here now, thats how it is too
I got a huge cow or two (something like it) in London a few weeks ago
on one cow was 'love me' and on the other was 'tender'
think thats how the wording was
must root them out .complete surprise where I saw them. lovely area
when I rounded a corner there they were
:D
Wishing you the very best for your very special day today Sandy.

Thanks Marie; Not only are they beautiful to see they're also beautifully painted, and the are BIG, almost life size, I can't imagine the amount of work that went into them. I guess I'm going to have to go bear hunting now :lol:, supposedly there are 77 of them. For more information about them and the event check here.

Here is a question. How do communities keep these from getting "vandalized"? I have seen picture like this and of cows where they are painted all cool like for some time, but how do they keep them from getting all trashed?

good question, There never seems to be a problem, for the most part these are small towns so I'm sure that helps, even though there is vandalism. it's nowhere near the scale of some of the cities. I also believe that most people realize that these are fund raises for the communities and will be auctioned off after they've been on display for a month or so. There is one town near me where they did this with Horses a year ago. the people that bought them at the auction have them still out side in front of there business or home and to date they still look as good as new.

I always get a kick when I see these sculptures. Here in NYC we have police dogs (and bears too, I think, not too sure), and in DC they have pandas. As with your bears, they all look unique.
What are they made of? papier mache? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! they're not made of papier mache but a fiberglass resin. this from there web site
The bears are made from a fiberglass-polyester resin mix that is strong enough to withstand normal wear and tear. The outer surface is primed white and then given to artists to create their masterpieces. Some pretty tough stuff if you ask me.:D
