I don't want to hear anymore about the tech aspects of photography. I can't stand it.

L this, L that...

I have a 10D and without the extra 2.43234316734 megapixels I can't shoot anymore...

My lenses cover from 24 to 400 mm, but I don't think I can live without a 600 mm prime (I'm an amateur BTW)...

I have a totally nice kits, but I also have 5 grand. I don't really need anything, please help me spend it...

Booo hooo hooo

[/exaggeration]

So I want to ask you this:

Do you know any sites, which list the greatest photographers of their time and their works? I wanna get inspired and get new ideas.

I suggest the forums on www.dpreview.com which lately has become a anything but photography talk forum (at least in the 300D forum).

If You don't want to talk or read about the tech aspects then just skip those threads but those topics belong here.

Groan. Measurebators.
I haven't heard that term in a while. I was really hoping I could purge it from my vocabulary.

There have been great photographers in every era. What I like to do is go to a large book store like Barnes & Noble or Borders and look through their 'artsy' photo books. You'll get excited, and it's free.

The photgraphers on following site think THEMSELVES they are the worlds best - if You agree or not is a different matter. Many users think a lot of the photos are too dark and sinister. But here we go: www.photoinspiration.dk ohh they consider themselves so good that You need to APPLY for membership and only if they like Your photos You will be granted a membership!

You can visit the photo gallery here. There're some excellent photos (and some "average") there.

I like to read National Geographic types of magazines. It's a pleasure to read the photos together with stories, culture...

Fine. No more talk about L's. What you need to do is simple. Sell your 10D and buy the 1D MkII.

That's a slightly tough question actually.
There are sites such as photo.sig but they just scroll through endless mixed images-both great and crud.I think you can search by 'most praised' and other similar searches which may help

photo.net has similar search options

I don't know of any sites that show the best of the best photographers :? It would be a pity if there isn't.

On most forums (including this site maybe) there are special forums for discussing images but they don't have any listings as such of 'the best'

What i do when i want to be inspired (i call it stealling ideas :D ) is look through the best on those sites

You know, I just don't understand people who choose to read something, and then complain about it.

I guess I am the only person in the world that would rather not read a thread than have to complain about it.

Of course the Share Photo, Critique Corner, Talk About Photography, and (to a lesser extent) General Chat boards are the best place to discuss the artistic side of the subject. The EOS, G-series, and Compact boards are really intended to be hardware oriented, and will occiasionally drift off into technical discussions. It's the nature of the beast.

I feel obliged to point out that there are legions of us absolutely devoid of talent who are doomed to spend the rest of our lives admiring the photos of others, and talking about technical issues including L lenses, sadly. Please be patient with us.

You know, I wrote this blurb about not being here if you don't like it.

But then I remembered that is what people today do, concentrate on what they don't like.

I like it here. If you don't oh well.

Whoa. Where did that come from?

I think Doc's original post was largely tongue-in-cheek.

The real question was:
Do you know any sites, which list the greatest photographers of their time and their works? I wanna get inspired and get new ideas.

The rest of it was satire, so let’s not be quite so touchy. We’re all friends here.

I realize that you're joking, but Nachtwey lists the equipment that he uses in the video that comes with the 10D. That's one lens that he doesn't list, and it makes sense if you look at his style. He tends to shoot at very close range with a short lens, such as the 17-35/2.8L or the 16-35/2.8L. He listed the 17-35 as being in his camera bag, but then there is a sample photo where the 16-35 is listed as the one that he used. I suppose that he bought the new lens when it came out.

If I'm not mistaken, Steve McCurry photographed the famous Afghan Girl, which today is one of the most recognizable faces in the world.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has one of the finest photography collections around, and you can browse part of their collection online:

http://www.sfmoma.org/collections/collections_photography.html

They regularly rotate pieces in their permanent photo exhibition so I go up there all the time. I've seen the Adams, Gursky, and Ed Weston special exhibitions there.

Oh come on guys. I was just marketing my thread. I don't mind the talk about the L lenses, it's just that I can't afford one and is jelous

Right now I have 2 lenses which cover from 18 to 200 mm, but I have only a few nice images. So I just wanna see some good photos.

I'm not anti tech guy, in fact I enjoy the measurubating. I just don't want to end up with no nice pics and 3 grands of equipment.

He may not be the very greatest photographer of all time, but in the field of nature photography, I get my inspiration from John Shaw. The late Galen Rowell would be a close second.
