I sold the D30 last week to a guy who wanted a Backup for his collection of 1D's. He asked to send it back cause the AWB in JPG Large wasn't good enough. OK, whatever, send it back, I need a good backup myself. So I tested it to make sure it was all still good before refunding. What do you think?

For a D30, I think your shots look great to me Mitch.

Thanks Reyno, and at ISO 400 on a cloudy day. All shot from my desk, through an open window. ;)

Thanks Mom, Shanny and Gary. Looks like I have found a new food the Blue Jays like too. I have also discovered something they like even more than peanuts, if that is possible. Acorns. I gathered up some acorns to see how they would go down. These guys went nuts, literally. I had 7 or 8 jays at the smorgasbord here. They stuff up to 5 of them in their craws at once, then go off to bury or eat them. Never seen a Blue Jay with a goiter, but that's what it looks like.

Looks like accurate color to me Mitch... I think keeping it as back up makes perfect sense... Clearly performs very well.....

Acorns, huh? There's a big tree just down the road from me with a ton, so I'll have to go collect some to try it out. I think I have my jays trained to understand the word 'peanut', since they always seem to show up when I go out back and call them. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm crazy with the "peanut, peanut, peanut!"

Liz, these guys are easily as smart as crows, and I had a crow that could talk. Mine are getting quite tame now and I have one that hangs out without being obnoxious, just sitting there and staring at me through the window til I throw out a peanut for him.

Acorns are free, and they really, really like them. Seems odd, cause they are all through the woods. I'm going down to Goose Island, by the feeder, and try and fill up a couple of those big seed bags tomorrow. :)

That's what I was thinking Alex. I'm just as happy having it back. :)

Looks like yours can still take some good shots, of course it could just be the person
using it. :)

The D30 is a nice camera. It was the first DSLR I used, and I got some great photos with
it. It started me down the road of Canon cameras (I used to shot Minolta film SLRs),
300D, 350D, 20D, 1D, 1Dmk2... (next?)

Thanks George. Yeah, my first Canon too. I did have a Kodak 8.2Mp 880, but the lens wasn't interchangable. It was OK, but didn't do telephoto well. :)

Yes, you're right they are very smart. I read a book recently called "Bird Brains: The Intelligence of Crows, Ravens, Magpies, and Jays" which was really interesting. That's why I was working on teaching them to understand the word "peanut." Now I will definitely have to try the acorns. I wonder if I say "peanut" and put out acorns, if they will know the difference!

I know I'm new and all but I really don't see a problem with any of these pictures. I think they look great, I'd love to have that camera as a primary.

I don't know Liz, try just calling acorn, acorn a few times and see if they still come in. :)

Thanks Travis. These were shot in RAW mode and processed in CS2 using my usual workflow. Nothing special, but I did run them through NeatImage and sharpened in LAB Color Mode, but I do that to most images, even from the 30D. And I guess it's still for sale. :)

Thanks Steve and Phil. HAHA. Of course there is nothing wrong with it. OK, it's old and slow compared to the 30D, but it can still take some good shots. :)

You loved it... and set it free... and it came back... It's meant to be Mitch :)

Nothing wrong with the camera! The pics are right-on for ISO 400 on a cloudy day, Must be the person behind it I guess lol

Amazing shots from such a lowly back up :( That's amazing about the blue jays and acorns. Haven't seen that yet, we have tons of acorns and blue jays. I'll have to be on the lookout for a blue jay looking like a hamster : )

Thanks Marco, it was a rough week.

Thanks Michele. I read that Blue Jays loved acorns and had to try it. It's true. I got the little ones, but I assume they like them all. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you. :)

I'm interested in all the acorn tests. I'm going out to Goose Island to get some more. They went through all mine in 3 days.

Thanks Bill. It's a good old camera. :)

Look good to me, Mitch. Now let's see if I have picked up where things left off. You are using a D30. You sold the 30D. You are waiting on a 1D. Correct?

canonloader

Thanks Ed. OK, you got it almost right. I sold the D30. I sold the 30D, I am waiting for the 1D and the guy who bought the D30 wanted to return it so I now have the D30 again and the 1D will be here Monday. :)

Good to see a camera back in your hands Mitch. The pictures look great but as they say, it's the person behind the camera that makes the art of photography what it is. :)

Thanks Bill. I'm looking forward to the 1D to see what I can do with that. :)
