Does it matter which brand? +R or -R?

I always make 2 copies for back up, and for whatever reason I buy the DVD +R

Does it matter?

Our local electronics store often has a great sale on DVD's and the brand is not anything national... does the brand actualy matter? I never buy the cheap ones, but it's such a great deal...

What do you guys think?

What do you guys think? It depends on the the burner, but with most of the newer burners it really doesn't matter. If you have been using +R without issues then stick with them.

I know a couple of friends that just use whatever media brand is cheapest and they have not had a problem. Again if it works for you just keep on using it. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Thanks for the reply.. :) I just was not clear on the +/- thing... Nice to know it's just a technology thing...

So, does anyone else have a preference over brands... or does it really not matter. Such an important thing because they are archiving my photo files.. I have started putting them on an external hard drive for storage, but I have already almost filled up a 300 gb drive, and am not finished transferring yet... So I guess I'll need one for each year or something...?

What do you all do?

I use Sony DvD's since they work well with my burner.
I won't go cheap on the medium I use for backup.

i guy at an electronics store explained it to me this way... In the beginning, there was 2 format, +r & -r, just like vhs and beta. Unlike vhs and beta, the hardware manufactures started make machines that will either one. So both formats are still around and you can uese either unless you have an old piece of equipment that is specific to one. But if you had one of these machines, you'd definately know.

If your drive can write it, your drive can read it.

There are, generically speaking, three classes of organic dyes used in optically recordable media. Taiyo Yuden DVDs use the dyes which are considered to be the most resistant to losing your data.

Good information guys.. Thanks again for your contribution to my question.

I'm wondering if Taiyo Yuden is a brand name??

You can find DVDs made by Taiup Yuden simply by Googling that name

I wonder if there's a way to determine the type of dye used in the major brands. Too bad it's not like the FDA incredients list on packaged foods. But it would be helpful to know which brands use the better dyes.

I wonder if there's an equivalent "Wilhelm" test for DVD dyes that gives some indication of longevity. I assume these things likely won't last as long as film negs, so I've just reconciled myself to buying bigger and bigger external drives to hold the really important stuff and client files.

There is a way of looking at the dye layer and determining by the color...gold. Unfortunately now even bargain units may be painted gold on the top side, fooling the buyer who judges merely be seeing the visible layer in a package!

Is gold the color of the dye used by Taiup Yuden?
