For those of you that have cards to hand out to potential photography customers, where do you get them? Do you print them yourself or order them from an on-line source?

Thanks,

Tim

from a friend of mine who owns a printing company. They make a lot of different kinds of business cards. Essentially you send in some pics of yours and they'll mock up some designs for you. Then you can send them back with what changes or suggestions you'd like to see, and they'll try again and send them back. Do this a few times until you get a design you like and you're good to go! Below is a picture of what mine look like. If you'd like me to get you in touch with them let me know!

if you type "free business cards" in google, the first link it returns is www.vistaprint.com : 250 free cards, you just pay for shipping.

heh, I like to use a separate email address for anything I do online to prevent clogging up my two primary addresses with spam. Seems anything you do online eventually leads to spam! Here is Scott's info, just tell him that Brandon sent ya:

I've ordered the free cards from VistaPrint, and their regular cards.

The free ones (which aren't exactly free, since you still have to pay a few bucks for shipping) weren't of sufficient quality for my needs. They're printed on lighter weight paper than the regular cards, and have some advertising for VistaPrint on the back.

The regular cards lack the VistaPrint text on their reverse, and various interesting options are available (at extra cost). They're of what I'd consider at least standard business card quality. I'm currently using these as my regular business cards.

I like free as much as the next guy, but at some point it's worth paying a little extra for significantly better results. This is one of those cases. I mean, even good quality business cards aren't all that expensive.

I simply designed my own business card, with a photo in one corner. I print these on my own inkjet printer on premium photo luster paper and cut them apart with a paper cutter. I use only about five per month, so this is effective.

Ok that is a good price. And best of all they will print in runs of as little as 100. That is exactly what I have been looking for because I want to have several versions of my cards.

I think I am going to order mine tonight.

I have always gotten mine from http://www.gotprint.com

Heard about them here in a different thread and have used them 3 or 4 times since. They do produce very good quality, glossy, photo cards at a reasonable rate.

I design mine myself in Photoshop, convert them to PDF and have them printed at Kinko's. Two day turn-around and I have complete control.

I have always used Vistaprint. The free ones are alright but once you get into how the site works you can do anything. Heavy paper, gloss, matte, color or b/w on the backside etc.

The have some so-so templates but you can also upload your own inmages & text. It is kind of like this site... the longer you stay on it the more you learn.

One hint: after a few orders they start sending you polls & questionaires (no spam ever!)and then offer free or discounted items or shipping only offers for taking the time. I have amassed a nice variety of cards, brochures, labels, even letterhead for very little $

They just launched a new upgraded sitewhich offers even more options.

If you all have Adobe Photoshop or other similar programs you can submit your own files to companies like http://www.printfirm.com .

I'd stay away from those "free business card" sites that you just pay for shipping. They use cheap paper, the cards are smaller than the standard 3.5 x 5. They also put their logo on the back. If anyone ever handed me a business card like that I'd toss it because they were too "cheap".

If you don't have the software to make the camera ready artwork, try http://www.lakeland-printing.com .

Both companies I mentioned print on thick 14 point paper, and they're UV Coated. (Shiny)

Another thing, stay away from those templates. You and the next guy might end up with the same business card.

Another idea is to buy a picture from istockphoto.com for 1.00, then you can use it as your photo background.

I ordered some from vistaprint.com and they are HORRIBLE! The print quality was really bad and everything about it looked cheep. I can say they have good customer service though because they refunded all my money.

Not free, but inexpensive, and you even get free samples before you decide if you would like to go with them.

Not to keep tooting vistaprint's horn, but I use them a lot from business cards, full-color postcards, brochures, etc. Like a previous poster stated, once you figure out how to work things by using their templates and ordering the features you want the cards can look to be of very nice quality. Vistaprint's big pricing hook is in the postage. If you want things quickly you pay a premium for it. If you want things in 10 to 14 days, it's a very good deal, IMHO.
