All I can say is hello Canon world, naaaaaaaaaaaa not really I was pointed to this fourm by a friend of mine also into airline photography like myself.
I recently purchased a Canon 10D with a 70mm-300mm lens and a smaller 28mm to 80mm lens also, Just this past weekend I upgraded (I hope) to a Sigma 18-125mm lens, should be here tomorrow, I have currently over 100 photos in the jetphotos.net database several of them were from a much loved Minolta Dimage 7i, (which has been sold overseas)and a few with airliners.net while the Dimage was a good camera it lacked speed, lens options, and overall sucked compared to the Canon.
My main focus right now in photography is airlines/airports and also Public Saftey, I have been chosen to provide departmental photo's for a large local fire department Engine/Ladders/Medics. I look forward to adding to the discussions here on the board.
Thanks again
Kevin

Welcome, Kevin.
Don't take my question too seriously, I'm
really more interested in your reply (should
you choose to reply) than stating my case,
as it were.
But where is, for you, the *sustained*
appeal of shooting pics of commercial
airliners? Sure, they're impressive, evoke
wonder, etc., but once you've seen an Airbus
or a Jumbo, you've kinda seen them all,
no? After a while, it's like looking at the car
pictures at the dealership that you have no
intention whatsoever of buying.
I'll concede I'm very ignorant on this type
of photography, but of course, there are
lots of you guys out there who like picture
of commercial planes (as opposed to
vintage, airshow acrobatics, etc.), so I'm
sure there's got to be more to this than I'm
seeing. I'm just hoping that I can experience
this thru your eyes.

Hey, Kevin, welcome. You're off to a good start equipment-wise, but then again, you apparently aren't totally new to this photography business. Good luck with your venture into the Canon world.
BTW, my wife and I 'discovered' Columbus on one of our cross-country trips---what a great city. We now always schedule an overnight stop there.

I understand you completely I have friends in the fire dept and other friends in the scanning area that love trains, I have never understood them, I mean at least planes have colors and go up and down... (LOL) I travel well I used to travel a bunch about 3-5 years ago and just picked up on the hobby, I also used to work at an airline about that many years ago and fell in love with the business and follow it today even though I no longer work with an airline. Maybe its the travel to exotic lands (ok some not exotic lands to) but you pick up on the atmoshere of the airport and you never really get rid of it. Hope that explains it to you. Cadenza. If that did not answer your question please PM me and I'll explain it more.
Thanks for the visting our fair city Belmondo its not bad. Not a whole lot of touristy things to do here but its a good pass through city.

http://images.fotopic.net/?id=2160921
Don't you just hate it when you clip the tail???
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=3180716
Ahh, yes my favourite redundant aircraft...
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=5287291
Same aircraft, just a night shot enhanced, or should I say lightened up...
http://images.fotopic.net/?id=2419954
I have tried to get into airliners.net but for some reason I can't seem to make the cut. I am really annoyed about this. I have seen far worse on the site than what I have submitted. JetPhotos is interesting but the adverts/popups get really annoying really fast! Any other questions, please PM me. I will warn you have have L Lenses and a monster Sigma EX lens to get the pics.

L Lenses[/color] and a monster Sigma EX lens to get the pics.
I also had no luck with getting anything accepted onto Anet to start with.
They are looking for real quality pictures, and I also saw many on there that I thought were worse than mine.
Even so, if you really read the reject notes, have a think etc it all becomes a bit clearer.
I load up a good looking picture to PS, if its a ground shot, bring up the grid to rotate correctly, then crop to centre the aircraft, bit of auto levels, maybe a little brightness, and lastly unsharp mask about 100 to 180% until it looks nice. Resize to 1024 or 1600 wide, save with highest compression keeping the file size under 1 meg and you should be in!
hope this helps, I've managed to get 19 on so far with my 300D and 75-300usm

I use to think the same about any number of different subject people shoot and found myself explaining to my wife why I like shooting sailboats. Her thought is "If you've seen one sailboat, you've seen them all" (she says there isn't a sailboat here in Rhode Island that I don't have a photo of ... I'm determined to show her she's wrong  )
Well, I wondered why people would shoot flowers or birds or jets or just about anything/everything they shoot ... decided it was for the exact same reason I shoot sailboats and lighthouses and seagulls and around the water ... I enjoy it! :D
