I went out to get a picture of the sunrise this morning and happened to see this on the way back to the car.

I stayed at a marina on Kentucky lake awhile back. We had these guys patrolling the docks at all hours of day and night. They got quite tame, even stealing crappies from five gallon buckets while the people fishing were right there. Very sneaky birds.

There are certainly a lot of them around, but I haven't had much luck getting close to them. Usually I see more of them very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon - which makes the picture taking more difficult, especially when I don't have my tripod.

I've had better luck in the morning, but not real early. First they are fishing for breakfast, but about 9am, they are fed and find a favorite spot to sit and digest and preen. Get up-sun from them and you usually get a good half hour of shooting before they are off to fish again. Best to find their spot though, and get there before them. :)

They are eating machines and eat when ever food is present, Find a spot where there are minnows and small fish and sooner or later they will be there, Lakes, Swamps or rivers.
