hi all,
i have been using a 10D for approx 2.5 years now & recently had the shutter block replaced due to the amount of work i put through it!
the drama i have had since day one is the files look great & have great curves etc on the info screen but once they are downloaded they lack contrast, colour, & sharpness. is it just me and my computer or is everyone having to do as much post production as i am? :?:

Sounds like a color space conflict; perhaps the 10D is set to Adobe_RGB and your work space set to (or defaulting to) sRGB. Check your camera settings to see what color space the camera is recording, and make sure your processing environment agrees. If the camera is Adobe_RGB and the work space sRGB the images will definitely appear flat -
that said, 10D post processing is required to gain the best advantage of color/sharpness/contrast/etc (all of my raw pics get some degree of post processing without exception - although many others here get great jpegs straight away without any post-process).

There are a number of different possible causes for your image quality problems: camera settings, the lens you are using; are you using lens hoods to prevent flare?, what software are you using on the computer, is your monitor properly calibrated and profiled, are you using color management etc. I post-process almost all of my images, but the 10D can certainly produce great, contrasty, colourful and sharp images straight out of the camera.

Really? Find the receipt and look at the date on it.
The 10D hasn't been out that long.

apologies all...it's been a year & a half!
as far as the lenses go i use only L series: 17/40, 24/70 2.8, 70/200 2.8,
24TS-E. flashes are 550EX & a 420EX. i use hoods & uv filters on all.
the profiles are both set to adobe RGB & it even appears to occur on personally set profiles.
classic example..just did studio product shots under courtney lights & despite them looking awsome on the rear screen when they tranfered across they looked dull & lacking contrast. after doing post work and burning to cd & viewing on the laptop they look great???
i don't get it!!! :?

OK, so you have your camera set to Adobe RGB.
- Are you shooting JPEG or RAW? If RAW, the colour space setting of your camera has no effect on the image; the colour space of the converted image is set in the conversion software. What RAW conversion software are you using?
- Is your monitor calibrated and profiled? If so, what software and hardware did you use to calibrate and profile it?
- Is colour management set up properly in the image editing software you are using? If it's Photoshop, what is your working colour space set to?
One symptom of looking at Adobe RGB images using software that doesn't support colour management (the majority of software on Windows) is that the colours look flat and undersaturated.
When you post images on the web, you should convert them from Adobe RGB to sRGB.

I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about..
But 10D raw files when opened in any raw converter look pretty dull to me... that is they look dull untill I tweek them! :)
But that to me is just part of the whole "RAW deal" the initial display of the "untweeked" RAW file is pretty plain.. and it's just waiting for us to tweek 'em to full blown vibrant life. Usally all it takes is a little saturation, contrast and shadow... and of course the all imprtant sharpening.
