It's strange. If I try to open an image in Photoshop, Photoshop always crashes. That dialogue box comes up asking if I want to report the problem to Microsoft. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop, but it did no good. I then tried rolling my operating system back to October of 2006 (when Photoshop had never been installed) and then reinstalling Photoshop, but I have the same problems. (I can roll back that far because I use Acronis True Image to house multiple stores of my OS and applications on an extra internal hard drive. True Image is a product like Norton Ghost.)
I have found an end around, however. Adobe Image Ready, which came with Photoshop, can open up files just fine. If I first open the image in Image Ready and then open it up in Photoshop from within Image Ready, the image opens fine in Photoshop and I can work on it. In fact, as long as I have Image Ready open, I can open whatever files I want in Photoshop. Then the moment I close Photoshop, I get that crash message. It makes no difference if Photoshop and Image Ready are the only programs I have open or if I have other stuff running. Photoshop always crashes.
I don't have this problem in either Paint Shop Pro or Ulead PhotoImpact, the other two image editors I use. In fact, I use these applications more than Photoshop because I could not afford Photoshop for the longest time and so I bought what I could afford and learned it. Now after I finally got the lingua franca of image editors, the really expensive one, it's the one that gives me problems.
I was sure the OS rollback was going to solve the problem. I don't want to go back any farther because I had a significant hardware change in October of 2006 and would therefore have to call up Microsoft to activate Windows. Plus, I'm not convinced that that would fix the prob. In Oct. of 06, Photoshop had never touched my system.
I'm using Windows XP Professional and Photoshop CS 2.
Anyone know what the heck is up?
