Crop doesn't work for me in #1.
I like #2, maybe seeing a bit more face would have been nice.
Why the squarish aspect ratio?

Rene, whatchoo mean it doesn't work for you? You can't see it? It's just a little squarey but includes everything without chopping off anything. What is your problem? :-)

Now #2 you have a legitimate complaint because his head is tilted down and you can't see his eyes but you don't seem to mind that very much. Charlie can be a difficult animal to shoot and his political alignment would horrify you.

A bit too centered I think: I'ld like to have a bit more space in the direction he's looking...

Ah, crop a bit off behind him, eh. I guess I enjoy everything not being the same all the time [he says as he admits that something you said a few months ago has him trying to retain the 2:3 crop on everything these days.]

OK, What do y'all do with those who wear the big ol hats, that cast the heavy shadows on their face? Dwight? Any tricks or tips?

This is the age old "Country" issue! Sometimes there is nothing to be done. Sometimes they wear their hats back enough. In some small venues you can try fill flash (which is not my forte) but it is what I did with Craig Morgan at a little bar:

Sometimes you can get an angle that sorta works as with this Bellamy Brothers shot:

Sometimes you can get enough head tilt to get partial face as with Brian McComas here:

Fortunately Brian's hat style is mostly front and back so there is often enough lighting from the side:

Ray Scott also gets his hat tilted back enough from time to time but he never gets that microphone out of his mouth:

Well, I guess he does when not singing ... I think this was also fill flash:

Here's fill flash with Mark Chesnutt:

For the venues in which you are not close enough or can't use fill flash I think you just have to train the camera on the artist and wait and wait and wait, and then, of course, wait some more while always being ready to fire because even Charlie Daniels tilts his head up sometimes:

Ewok, didn't mean to steal your thread, buddy! Sorry.

they both might benefit from a little sharpening. they also seem to have some jpg pixelation issues.

Yup, I think part of this is the file density ... he's only at 66KB and the pixel dimensions are max'ed out. When attaching images I always try to push right up to the 100KB limit.
