View Full Version : Getting to grips with manual exposure - U15 soccer

After some experimenting over the last couple of weeks, I tried metering "off the grass" today as suggested by KIPAX (thank you). Here are some of the results - a wee bit of tweaking in PS but generally, exposure was about spot on for me. Been shooting soccer for a few season now - following the team in red since they started at U11 level. I put a slideshow together at the end of each season which is showed at Presentation night and because I need some good shots from each game, have been relying on the camera getting it right - sticking with Av. Needing decent shots from each game has always been my excuse for relying on the camera and NOT experimenting with manual but this year, will try and improve on quality!
Now then - that focus thang - too may oof for me at the moment. Maybe I will try and shoot the game rather than "our players" - who sadly don't always have the ball - our boys always seem to be behind the action - or is that me trying to find another excuse?

Number 1 - The black and white boys were certainly bigger than ours although the player is our smallest and yes, I missed the focus on my boy in goal.
C&C please and welcome,
Alan

Hang in there, the consistent exposure will pay dividends long term. M is your friend.

Nice photo's, exposure looks spot on! - be careful with your cropping though.

Blimey! - I thought I was seeing things when I looked at the height difference in your first pic. I thought for a minute that it was the famous U11's v's U30's final :-)

#17 looks like a giant!!!!! Even though #2 is OOF it's still a nice capture.

#17 looks like a giant!!!!!

Must say, if I hadn't been there and taken the shot, I would have thought that either #17 was closer to the camera (but then again, with him and our red player in focus at f/3.2, that argument wouldn't hold) OR that there was some Photoshopping going on - which I can assure you there wasn't.

The more I look at it, the odder it looks!

Yes number 17 looks to be a big lad. Its all practice and more, but the main thing is...Do you feel comfortable now you are shooting in "M" All the top fellow's shoot that way so it must have something going for it. Good Luck hope it works out well for you "Keep Trying"
